Position Description

Area Director
Carroll University

Classification: Support Staff- Full Time

Reports to: Associate Director of Residence Life

The Area Director is responsible for the overall operation of assigned housing area. This is a twelve month, live-in position. The Office of Residence Life and Housing's goal is to provide safe, inclusive, and supportive living and learning environments that positively impact student engagement, retention and success. • Supervision
o Supervise, train, and evaluate live-in student staff
o Facilitate student staff development
o Coordinate weekly staff meetings and one to one meetings
• Community Development & Student Support
o Facilitate, support, and track co-curricular programming and community development o Act as a resource for students, faculty, staff, and parents/guardians
o Facilitate individual development and student support through coordinating roommate
mediation processes, following-up on student concerns and making appropriate referrals
based on student need
o Serve as an advocate for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles o Advise Hall Council and/or leadership group programs and initiatives
• Administration
o Attend weekly meetings with other professional staff members, division meetings,
retreats, and professional development workshops, and participate in committee
o Prepare quarterly, mid-year, and end of the year reports
o Maintain programming, professional development and administrative budgets o Assist with Student Affairs initiatives
• Building Operations
o Collaborate with campus departments to ensure the safety, security, and general
maintenance of the residential facilities
o Coordinate all openings and closings of residential facilities o Oversee the supervision of front desk and mail operations o Manage area furniture and key inventories
• Committee/Leadership Area
o Serve on the committees for selection and training of professional and student staff
o Serve as the coordinator of one of Residence Life and Housing's leadership areas
• Student Conduct
o Support and uphold all university policies and procedures listed in the Student Handbook o Adjudicate student conduct cases as an administrative hearing officer as needed
o Option to participate in Carroll Conduct Board hearings with faculty, students and staff as needed
• Serve in a campus wide on-call emergency response rotation (including summer and university breaks)
• Support and participate in summer Residence Life and Housing operations including assistance with camps and conferences, including mandatory participation in the annual Special Olympics competition
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications: Education and/or Experience
• Bachelor's Degree required, Master's degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or related field preferred
• Two years of experience in Residence Life or relevant graduate assistantship work preferred
• Experience in supervising and advising student staff
• Experience in programming and community development
• Leadership development and teambuilding experience
• Emergency response experience in a collegiate environment
