Position Description

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean & Director of Residential Life and Community Standards serves as a team member of the Student Life Division within the university and is responsible for the comprehensive management of residential programs, facilities and staffing for a residential population of 1,700 undergraduates. The Assistant Dean & Director of Residence Life and Community Standards is principally responsible for the recruitment, hiring and training of the residence life student and professional staff. This includes supervision of Assistant Directors, Residence Directors, Assistant Residence Director, Resident Assistants, and shared supervision of one Administrative Assistant and Office Assistants. The Assistant Dean & Director of Residential Life and Community Standards is responsible for overall programming and development in residence halls. The Assistant Dean & Director of Residence Life manages student concerns and parent relations and serves as the Dean of Students central university judicial officer. The Associate Dean of Students will provide daily supervision of the Assistant Dean & Director of Residential Life and Community Standards.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the Office of Residential Life and the following staff: 2 Assistant Directors, 2 Residence Directors, 1 Assistant Residence Director, Resident Assistants and shared supervision of one Administrative Assistant, and Office Assistants for East Falls and Center City campus.
  • Develop, plan and implement the professional and paraprofessional staff training program.
  • Oversee and coordinate training and enforcement of conduct policies and Title IX compliance within Residential Life.
  • Serve as the Dean of Students central university judicial officer.
  • Establish and supervise residential life safety and security procedures in coordination with the Office of Safety & Security and Executive Director for Housing Operations.
  • Provide leadership and coordination of residential life programming model.
  • Oversees the development and management of the residence life budget, manage all department fundraising efforts, contracted vendors including delivering of services to residents.
  • Coordinate and assist Dean of Students Office divisional and department student assessment efforts.
  • Serves as a member of the Student Support Network (Student Intervention Team and Behavioral Intervention Team)
  • Prepare written reports, presentations, campus communications, marketing strategies, follow-through and outreach.
  • Develop and implement long range strategic planning for Residential Life
  • Oversee assessment of various residential life programs and provide recommendations for changes.
  • Will act as deputy to the Dean of Students, and represent the Dean of Students Office.
  • In coordination with the Dean of Students, oversee the Administrator on-Call (AOC) and participate in the AOC system.
  • Serves as liaison to other university departments, Safety and Security, Physical Plant, Athletics, Dining Services, etc.
  • Work with the Office of Student Engagement and the Admissions Office to implement and support first year initiatives.

Job Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or a similar area preferred.
  • Minimum five to seven years of progressive experience in student affairs.
  • Experience in, and a strong understanding of, Residence Life student conduct. 
  • Knowledge of mental health conditions and ability to engage in emergency situations.
  • Visionary outlook and strong background in student development theory and practice, facilities and budget management, policy development/implementation and supervision.
  • Appreciation for all forms of diversity and a willingness to work with students and staff to create an environment that fosters respect, appreciation, and values the contributions of all members of the community.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external constituents
  • The ability to collaborate with personnel in Security, Physical Plant, and academic departments and other university offices in order to meet the needs of residential students.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to motivate students.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evening, weekend and “on call” assignments
