Position Description

The Assistant Dean contributes to all aspects of the Admissions process working to support our vision to recruit high-achieving students with a commitment to expanding access and diversity across all dimensions. The Assistant Dean would be responsible for conducting information sessions on and off campus, recruitment travel, reviewing applications for admission, interviewing prospective students, building relationships with high school counselors and community based organizations, and partnering with colleagues across the College. All Admissions staff are expected to contribute to Bowdoin’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The position calls for someone who will be able to join our team and take an active role in communicating, recruiting, and enrolling underrepresented students while contributing to our campus programming initiatives. It is important that they be able to clearly articulate the values and benefits of a liberal arts education and the opportunities available to students at Bowdoin.


Job Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree is required. Applicants must possess excellent organizational skills and exceptional oral and written communication skills; strategic thinking and problem-solving skills; a willingness to travel and to work extended hours during peak periods; a thorough and creative event planner; and the ability to manage both the small details and a big vision. Proficiency in a variety of common programs of the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) is necessary. Prior experience operating Slate, our admissions database, is a plus. The successful candidate will be someone with a deep enthusiasm for the experience of a liberal arts education, possessing the ability to engage students from diverse backgrounds, with a high level of organization, energy, and exceptional presentation skills.

A minimum of three years of relevant recruitment experience in a private liberal arts college or in selective college advising is preferred with an understanding and enthusiasm for admissions work and its cyclical nature as well as an appreciation working with high school and college students. Must possess creative initiative, flexibility, and the ability to exercise discretion. A valid driver’s license and the ability to comply with the College’s Motor Vehicle Policy is required. This position is subject to a criminal history background check and motor vehicle record check.

Normal business hours between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm. Long hours and frequent weekend and evening work required during peak periods. Travel is a necessary component of this position. This is an exempt position requiring the time commitment necessary to successfully complete job requirements.
