Position Description

General Purpose: 

The Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) is a graduate and professional school with a mission to create and provide knowledge and leadership for a sustainable future. Reporting to the Associate Dean/Chief of Staff of the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and with a dotted line to the Dean, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs serves as the chief student affairs officer. The Assistant Dean will provide leadership and vision, administration, coordination and budgetary/financial oversight for the Student Affairs department. The Student Affairs department supports the lifecycle of a graduate student from the point of matriculation to graduation, including but not limited to activities related to orientation and graduation, career development, Title IX, student health and wellness, student programming, and more generally, many aspects of the student experience outside of the classroom. The Assistant Dean will also work closely with the Community and Inclusion office to integrate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives throughout the student experience.

The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs has a broad and evolving portfolio of duties, acting as the strategic administrative partner to support the non-academic needs of a vibrant student community. The Assistant Dean exercises leadership and management over all student life activities, including student discipline, student government, student organizations, and student activities.

The Assistant Dean will work collaboratively and provide effective management of a team of professional employees who assist them with all aspects of student affairs. They will also work with leadership from other teams at the School, including but not limited to: Enrollment Management, Community and Inclusion, Academic Affairs, and Development and Alumni Affairs. The Assistant Dean will also serve as a liaison to other student support units at the university.


Job Requirements

Required Education and Experience: 

Master’s degree in student affairs, counseling, higher education leadership or related field and 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and facility with best practices in student affairs. Well-developed organizational, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to handle stressful, challenging and emotional situations including being comfortable with ambiguity and change
  • Demonstrated leadership skill with the ability to manage and mentor staff as well as address personnel and employee relation issues.
  • Demonstrated ability working with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, university constituents, and external organizations.
  • Capable of representing the Dean and F&ES in multiple contexts.
  • Ability to create and sustain an environment of mutual respect and inclusion by supporting the differences of F&ES community members.
  • Preferred Education and Experience: 1. Interest in and knowledge of the environment.  2. Demonstrated leadership on issues of diversity and inclusion. 3.Demonstrated counseling skills in order to address student behavioral health needs and professional development. 4. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other campus units.  5. Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, administration and fiscal management
