Position Description

 The Assistant Dean serves as an integral member of the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards, supporting the Senior Associate Dean/Director of Student Conduct & Community Standards and contributing to the overall direction and priorities of the office.   The Assistant Dean provides services and works closely with Brown University undergraduate, graduate and medical students.  The position serves as a Case Administrator for student conduct cases and as a Dean's hearing officer.   The Assistant Dean works with students and others to investigate violations of the Brown University Code of Student Conduct. The Assistant Dean promotes equity and social justice practices with a focus on education and restorative justice.

     - Case Administration.  Following established student conduct protocols and practices as defined in the Brown University Student Conduct Code, work to manage and implement the code of conduct and the procedures to address violations of the code.  Counsel and advise students, faculty, staff, and others on our conduct processes.      
     - Data and Process Management. Work on supporting operational functions of the office through taking a leadership role in managing office data and processes.       
    - Community Outreach. Assist with initiatives designed to promote community and civility.  Represent the office and division across campus.  Serve as a member of the Administrator On-Call program.  Participate in and complete other projects and assignments as assigned.


Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree with 5-7 years of relevant experience in student conduct, student affairs, residential life, or law or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated ability to create, manage, and communicate complicated processes required. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent skills in data and system management. Position will encompass the ability to manage a student conduct case management system such as Maxient that includes system management, record keeping, and report generating.
  • Demonstrated commitment and success working in a multicultural environment with a critical understanding of social justice issues in both student and workplace settings required. Skills, knowledge and experience specifically focused on the needs of students of color, students from indigenous communities, LGBTQ students, international students, students from diverse faith communities, students with disabilities, undocumented students, and/or first-generation college students is preferred.
  • Ability to problem solve and to make difficult and timely decisions utilizing sound judgement, assuming ownership of the problem and resolving it in a collaborative manner.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, and families to advise and support undergraduate, graduate, and medical students through difficult and complicated situations.
  • Experience in managing crises effectively and collaboratively while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism is preferred.
  • Flexibility to evolve with a dynamic student affairs environment.
