Position Description

The Department of Residence Life at the University of Pittsburgh welcomes applications for the position of Assistant Director, Academic Initiatives.  This Assistant Director (AD) serves on the central leadership team providing direction and oversight to the department. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Director of Residence Life, supervises Area Coordinators and in-directly supervises 3-4 Resident Directors.  

Specific duties include: Responsible for development and success of academic initiatives in the residence halls, which include Living Learning Communities and specialty theme floors/buildings, academic programming, and personalized education initiatives.  Create and implement academic enhancement programs for residence hall students. Coordinate academic support programs that occur in the residence halls with our Academic Resource Center and other academic partners. Coordinate the development and implementation of academic trips and special initiatives for residence hall students. Create and implement retention initiatives. Coordinate Residence Life assessment and data collection. Manage budget in area. Lead departmental committees and participate in the training of staff.  Serves in the central duty staff rotation to provide support for campus duty staff, residential and off campus incidents.

Job Requirements

Requirements for this position include a Masters Degree and progressive experience in Residence Life or Student Affairs.  A Master’s Degree in Student Development, Higher Education Administration, Counseling or a related field is preferred. Theoretical understandings of student development and community development are required. Experience in developing and working with Living Learning Communities and faculty programs is preferred.  Successful candidates will demonstrate excellent communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively in achieving the goals of Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs and help provide our students with the best collegiate experience in the world.  PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required as a condition of employment.
