Position Description

General Summary:

Specifically, the Assistant Director for Diversity Education and Student Engagement designs, delivers and evaluates programs on topics surrounding diversity, inclusion, equity and authentic engagement across difference.  This individual will primarily create and oversee an intergroup dialogue program, and oversee co-curricular engagement for international students. This individual will also be responsible for innovative initiatives that support curriculum building around diversity, equity, and inclusion.  

Essential Functions:

Administrative

Develops and manages annual budgets
Supervises student interns or graduate assistants
Evaluate and report on program outcomes
Participates on divisional or campus wide committees and/or projects related to diversity and inclusion.

Collaborative Partnerships

Collaborates with key Homewood Student Affairs and Academic Affairs stakeholders to develop and implement new training modules that enhance the capacity of JHU student leaders to:

Work with diverse populations
Engage in thoughtful interactions around issues of inclusion, intersectionality and identity.

Works with Diversity and Inclusion offices (Campus Ministries, Women and Gender Resources, Office of Multicultural Affairs, and LGBTQ Life) to create and implement an intergroup dialog program among interested student organization members and other participants. 

Student Events/Advising and Advocacy

Supports/Advises representatives from other multicultural student organizations as they plan and implement the annual JHU Cultural Celebrations.
Collaborates with the Assistant Director for Programming to create in-depth opportunities/programming that supports the #Heritage365 celebrations.
Recruits, hires, trains and manages the OMA’s SEED Educators (Students Educating and Empowering for Diversity).  Works with the group to plan, implement, and evaluate active or passive diversity or social justice awareness programs.
Advises a cohort of multicultural student organizations and representatives under the OMA Multicultural Leadership Council.
Advise an International Student Coalition organization that supports institutional engagement and addresses concerns within the population

Strategic Initiatives

Research best practices and peer institutions on an on-going basis in order to evaluate current student development program offerings and to identify areas of need and growth.
Advance diversity education work (Train the Trainers) through key cultural immersion/competencies that recruit faculty and staff around supporting students and cultural identity.
Support and represent leadership development trainings, retreats, and events hosted by Homewood Student Affairs offices and departments related to identity development.

Other duties assigned

Create marketing content to address demographics and information around multiculturalism.
Represent the office for open houses and orientations.
Assess trainings, initiatives, and programs produced.
Complete other tasks and initiatives as assigned.


Job Requirements

Education:

Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel demonstration or other related field required.

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:

Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of student development, identity development.
Highly skilled in creating and facilitation of Intergroup Dialogue programs.
Experience supporting diverse student populations; experience in international student engagement.
Demonstrated ability to relate to students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, student-oriented, and data driven environment.
Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills.
Demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills.
Ability to develop and implement short and long-range plans to meet program needs.
Computer skills in Microsoft Office, Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint a must.
