Assistant Director for Activities and Involvement

The Assistant Director for Activities and Involvement is responsible for developing high quality student programs and services for the campus community with and complementary to the goals and objectives of the University’s Flagship Agenda; for leading Coordinators in the implementation of student activities, services, and initiatives; for ensuring quality training and development opportunities students and advisors; for leading Campus Life students and staff whose programs may include speakers, multicultural programs, Homecoming, late night programs, performing arts, etc.; for providing students with learning opportunities to develop leadership, creative and career skills.

Job Description

30% Supervise and evaluate the Campus Life Coordinator for Activities and Campus Life graduate assistant(s) for activities. Lead staff and advise Campus Life student leaders & organizations (inc. Student Activities Board and Homecoming) to develop and implement plans for co-curricular, social/networking and other events for the university community. Guide and direct staff and student leaders in developing competencies in establishing goals, implementing plans, meeting deadlines, creating and fulfilling promotional campaigns and evaluating event learning outcomes.

 

30% Supervise and evaluate the Campus Life Coordinator for Involvement and Campus Life graduate assistant(s) for Involvement. Advise, train and hold accountable general LSU student organization leaders and staff advisors on University policies, procedures and other appropriate guidelines pertaining to event planning, event registration, and organization management. Ensure Campus Life delivers effective processes for LSU's recognized student organizations, including: training for student leaders and advisors; event approvals; and, annual re-registrations.

 

20% Oversee Activities and Involvement area budgets and program planning programming. Engage and assist staff and student leaders to prepare, evaluate and accept event proposals using sound campus research, budgetary planning, data from learning outcomes assessments and event evaluations. Review and approve purchases and expenditures. Negotiate and review contracts for professional services for events. Prepare regular reports of budget-related activities. Work with University depts. and partners to support Campus Life events though appropriate co-sponsorships.

 

20% Meet regularly with advisors, student officers, and other involved students to advise and support them in leading student organizations and in managing student events and initiatives. Serve as a Tier One staff member on the Campus Life Volunteer Management Plan when activated by the LSU Emergency Operations Center. Lead, coordinate and evaluate University-wide programming for Fall Fest, Holiday Spectacular, and the Homecoming Coordinating Committee. Serve on university committees as requested through the Office of the Dean of Students. Participate in professional development programs by attending seminars, workshops and conferences. Assume other administrative assignments as required by the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Campus Life.


Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree and three years of professional experience in student activities/involvement/student development work. Student development work including experience in student affairs to include supervision of professional staff or graduate assistants.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds; strong human relations skills; and strong oral and written communications skills.

 

Special Qualifications:

 

Knowledge of student development concepts and techniques. Ability to work effectively with students and with people from diverse backgrounds. Oral and written communication skills.  The work requires a minimum of 40 hours per week, plus frequent evening and some weekend assignments.
