Position Description

Assistant Director for Financial Advising, The College
Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island

Under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Dean for Financial Advising and as a part of the Diversity and Inclusion team in the College, the Assistant Director for Financial Advising manages the College’s Book/Course Material Support (BCMS) Pilot Program and contributes to the implementation of other related programs and initiatives. Financial Advising in the College is designed to provide dedicated, holistic advising and programming around intersecting financial, academic and personal issues to Brown undergraduates who have the highest demonstrated financial need. Financial Advising ensures outreach, timely communication, and overall smooth operation of The BCMS Pilot Program which assists with the costs of required books and related course materials.

Launched successfully in the 2018-2019 academic year, the BCMS Pilot Program will expand significantly in 2019-2020. In this newly created position, the Assistant Director will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Financial Advising to finalize all BCMS program protocols and effectively run all aspects of the program. The Assistant Director will have the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities as the program and its operations become more established, beginning with the day-to-day management of the Laptop Repair, Replacement and Support Fund and related student advising. The Assistant Director plays a key role with other colleagues to inform students about Emergency, Curricular and Co-curricular Gap (E-GAP) Funds and a variety of additional support services, resources, and opportunities. The Assistant Director will be a thought partner and collaborate with the Assistant Dean on the analysis of data and developing reports for the BCMS Pilot and other programs and initiatives.


Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree, and two years’ experience in higher education as an advisor, counselor, and/or academic administrator.
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, problem solving skills, including very strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. Strong understanding and knowledge of the assets and challenges to attending college as a zero PC student and/or intersecting populations (e.g. underrepresented students, first-generation college students, international students, undocumented students, etc.)
  • Ability to implement, evaluate and assist strategic plans and activities that support Financial Advising programs and contribute to the overall goals and objectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to build strong relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels.
  • Ability to work effectively under deadlines, manage multiple simultaneous projects, and produce high quality products.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and proven responsible decision-making skills; tact and discretion are required to deal with sensitive and/or confidential information.
  • Self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently.
