Assistant Director for Health Promotion and Wellness

The Assistant Director of Health Promotion and Wellness utilizes evidence-based practices to create and deliver comprehensive, socioculturally relevant health and wellness promotion and prevention strategies for Butler University students. This position focuses on topics such as substance use and abuse, injury prevention, immunization and infectious disease, nutrition and physical fitness, and mental health. This position provides training, instruction and advisement for student advocates and peer education programs as well as student wellness programming and curriculum development.
Implement evidence and theory-based practices for an inclusive and culturally-competent University health promotion strategy that includes education for the Butler community, campus initiatives for healthy environments, and responsibility for reviewing and creating campus policies and strategies with a focus on health and wellness
Collaborate with campus and community partners including Health Services, Sexual Assault Response and Prevention, Counseling and Consultation Services, and other health and well-being focused department
Contribute to BUBeWell by coordinating programs and services for students that advance an intentionally-inclusive campus community.
Supervise BUBeWell Student Council (~5) and BUBeWell Champions (student advocates and peer educators) through on-going electronic communication, regular meetings, and continued training
Demonstrate professional field awareness of American College Health Association (ACHA) including Healthy Campuses 2020/2030, NASPA/Baachus, Okanagan Charter for Health Promoting Universities
Assess and evaluate all programs and initiatives in a continuous manner that coincides with the Student Affairs Data Assessment Department
Track and report all substance abuse prevention efforts in compliance with federal mandates including the Clery Act and the Department of Education Drug Free Schools and Communities Act.
Use evidenced-based practices to develop comprehensive health promotion campaigns for campus including but not limited to topics such as substance use and abuse, injury prevention, immunization and infectious disease, nutrition and physical fitness, and mental health
Serves as the University’s primary campus liaison to the BACCHUS Initiatives Peer Education Network within the NASPA Association for Higher Education Administrators.
Serves as liaison to local community advocacy and counseling resources and statewide coalitions through active participation in local organizations such as Drug Free Marion County and the Indiana Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking
Qualifications and Requirements:
Master’s degree in Health Education, Health Promotion, or similar health-related field.
A minimum of three year's (36 months) related health education/promotion paid work/practitioner experience
A minimum of one year's (12 months) supervisory experience overseeing interns, practicum students, and volunteers.
Work experience as a health education/promotion practitioner within a higher education setting
Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) or similar designation.
Required Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of health and wellness promotion and prevention education theories.
Knowledge of human developmental theories.
Knowledge of American College Health Association’s Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education.
Excellent oral and written communication skills including active listening, empathy, and demonstrated knowledge of the use and application of social media and video as a tool to engage audiences.
Demonstrated cultural competence; proven effectiveness in serving the needs of a diverse campus community.
Ability to work some evenings and weekends periodically.
