Position Description

Assistant Director for Housing and Residence Life

Student Development and Assessment

Position Number: 166001

The Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life for Student Development and Assessment provides developmental opportunities for the residential students. Additionally, the Assistant Director provides departmental leadership for ongoing student development, living-learning communities, student conduct, and will lead departmental assessment efforts. The Assistant Director is a member of the department’s central leadership team and is responsible for providing departmental leadership with emergency management and crisis intervention. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Housing and Residence Life.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Staff Supervision and Development:

The Assistant Director is responsible for providing leadership, supervision, and development for the staff in assigned residential communities. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Direct supervision of Area Coordinator(s) who manages 2-3 communities
  • Indirect supervision of Graduate Assistant(s), Head Resident Advisor(s), and Resident Advisor Team(s)
  • Direct supervision of residence hall tutoring program and related initiatives.

Departmental Leadership and Management:

The Assistant Director is responsible for serving as a member of the department’s central leadership team that provides overall leadership and direction within the department. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Participating in processes enacted to set policies and/or develop procedures
  • Assisting with long-range planning efforts
  • Assisting in the creation and execution of the mission, vision, and goals of the Department.

Community Development:

The Assistant Director is responsible for working with the staff in assigned residential communities to ensure the development of positive and vibrant atmosphere. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Implementing creative and innovative methods of developing connections between residents, including assisting with the development and implementation of the Residential Curriculum and Curricular Approaches
  • Helping foster an environment where the academic success of residents can be maximized and realized
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of Living-Learning Communities
  • Assisting in the department’s response to student conduct cases, roommate conflicts, and other resident concerns.

Crisis Management

The Assistant Director is responsible for the management and referral of critical incidents. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assisting staff with the development of relationships with WSSU PD, Ram Assist, and other campus partners necessary to manage crisis situations
  • Ensure that staff maintain awareness of campus response protocols and resources
  • Participating in year-round duty rotation that provides support to the staff and residential population
  • Maintain awareness of campus response protocols and resources.

Administration

The Assistant Director is responsible for working with the staff in assigned residential communities to ensure that administrative and operational procedures are well managed. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that the overall administrative operations are properly managed. This includes building occupancy, damage billing, and management of keys, etc.
  • Assisting staff with the development of relationships with central office staff, housekeeping, housing craft, zone 3 maintenance, and other campus partners
  • Ensuring that budgetary and fiscal procedures of each community are well managed

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serving on departmental and University committees and projects
  • Other duties as assigned.

FUNCTIONAL AREA RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Development:

The Assistant Director is responsible for management and administration of the departmental student conduct process and procedures. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Providing support to the Area Coordinators in areas of student conduct and student accountability
  • Managing Area Coordinator caseloads through Maxient Student Conduct software
  • Working cooperatively with the Dean of Students Office on all departmental student conduct matters
  • Training staff on processes and procedures involving the student conduct process
  • Providing departmental student conduct statistics on an annual basis
  • Providing departmental support to Living-Learning ommunities and thematic housing initiatives including assisting with the development and implementation of the Residential Curriculum and Curricular Approaches
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support the academic success of residential students
  • Ensuring that students’ academic needs are being met, including coordinating the intervention with academically at-risk students.

Assessment:

The Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating the overall direction and evaluation of departmental efforts designed to encourage residential students to remain engaged on campus. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the coordination of training for the Area Coordinators, Graduate Assistants, and undergraduate staff
  • Assisting in the coordination of comprehensive and developmental educational opportunities
  • Assisting in the marketing of Housing and Residence Life, including establishing an on-line social media presence
  • Coordinating departmental assessment efforts including the first-year pre- and post-tests, 12 Days of Survey, etc. and interpreting and presenting the results.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Master’s Degree in student personnel, higher education administration, or a related field
  • Three to five years of progressive experience in residence hall administration, including recent experience as a live-in staff member in a university residence life program
  • Experience in conflict resolution, mediation, and application of student development theory in a residence hall setting
  • Experience working autonomously and the ability to exercise excellent judgment
  • Desire to work with and address the needs of a diverse student population
  • Demonstrated organizational and leadership abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising full-time, Master’s level professional staff
  • Familiarity and working knowledge with Banner, Maxient, and RMS-Mercury softwares
  • Knowledge and experience with the Residential Curriculum and Curricular Approaches
