Position Description

The Assistant Director for Residence life will provide leadership and direction related to Residence Life based on university housing system. Provide support for the Director for Residence Hall Operations.

  • Responsible for the leadership and administration of assigned residential area, as well as summer projects. Conducts hiring, selection, training, and development for 5-9 full-time professional and 45-85 paraprofessional staff members, particularly in the areas of: community building, emergency procedures/crisis management, diversity, and policy. Assesses and evaluates performance of staff. Develops and manages area budget.
  • Develops and implements a shared vision. Uses the principles of student and community development to implement programs and strategies for student engagement. Actively encourages environments that promote inclusiveness and personal and social responsibility. Implement the residential education model. Assess and evaluate student programs and services; support living-learning communities and other student success initiatives.
  • Assists in developing and implementing residence life policies and procedures. Adjudicates students through Residence Life and University conduct systems. Counsels students having personal, academic, lifestyle, and career concerns. Assists residents as they pursue their university experience. Makes referrals to University agencies as needed. Serves as 24-hour point-person for residential area.
  • Collaborates with various university departments, as well as external agencies. Serve on Student Affairs, University, and chair departmental committees as required. Represents division and Residence Life to parents, guests, and members of the University community. Advise student area councils, University Residence Hall Association, the Resident Assistant Advisory, or campus student organizations.
  • Inspects residential facilities and works directly with Facilities staff on developing solutions to issues; recommends projects and facilities needs to Director. Maintains accurate records and assists in damage assessments and appeals. Assists with the development of new policies as well as the periodic review of current policies. Ensures that the staff are enforcing policies consistently. Implements fire drills.

Driving Required

A valid Texas, Class C, driver’s license is required to apply for this job; driving is an essential job function. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Work Shift

​Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm; May include nights and weekend events; on-call availability required

 


Job Requirements

Required

  • Master's degree. 4 years of Residence Life Management, or equivalent field.
  • Experience working with students in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working in both higher education and residence life.
  • Experience managing crisis, conflict, and emergencies in a higher education setting.
  • Experience developing educational and developmental programs for students.
  • Experience supervising a staff.
  • Experience managing a budget.
  • Experience with student conduct.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred 

  • 3 to 5 years of work experience, post masters.
  • Experience supervising graduate or full-time staff.
  • Experience with residential curriculum or outcome-based learning.
  • Experience conducting learning or organizational assessment.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership and progressive responsibility over time.
  • Demonstrated communication and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated customer services skills.
  • Experience creating and implementing a shared vision and strategic plan.
  • Experience creating, managing, and analyzing a budget and associated spreadsheets.
  • Experience leading departmental committees or initiatives.
  • Presentation or public speaking experience.
