Position Description

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Dean & Director of Residential Life and Community Standards, the Assistant Director of Residential Life is responsible for assisting in the comprehensive management of residential programs and staffing for a residential population of 1,700 undergraduates. The Assistant Director of Residential Life oversees the recruitment, hiring and training of the residence life student and professional staff. This includes supervision of 2 Residence Directors, Assistant Residence Director, Residence Assistants and Office Assistants on either the East Falls or Center City campus. The Assistant Director is responsible for overall programming and development in residence halls. The Assistant Director of Residence Life manages student concerns and parent relations and serves as one of the Dean of Students conduct officers.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of 2 Residence Directors, Assistant Residence Director, Resident Assistants and Office Assistants for either East Falls or Center City campus. Develop student leadership opportunities and work to enhance area community.
  • Recruit, select, train, supervise and evaluate student staff. Promote staff teamwork and coordinate staff duty / area coverage.
  • Develop, plan and implement the professional and paraprofessional staff training program.
  • Oversees the management of the residence life budget, manage all department fundraising efforts, including with contracted vendors including delivering of services to residents.
  • Support the development of residential Learning Communities.
  • Maintain daily student contact within residential area.
  • Create strong partnerships within the Student Life division and with other department’s on- campus, including: faculty, security/campus police, dining services, academic support services, physical plant, and administrative offices.
  • Promote community development, provide leadership to student staff for implementation and oversee programming budget.
  • Provide appropriate referrals for students regarding academic, social, and psychological issues.
  • Serve as a hearing officer and support the divisional protocol regarding the University Community Standards.
  • Serve in one or more capacities in support of the department and under departmental leadership.
  • Other duties and functional area responsibilities as named by Assistant Dean and Director of Residential Life.
  • Serve as an Administrator on Call (AOC) in the campus-duty rotation.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required. Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or a similar area preferred.Previous Resident Life experience with a minimum of three years full-time experience beyond an entry-level position required.
  • Visionary outlook and strong background in student development theory and practice, facilities and budget management, policy development/implementation and supervision.
  • Appreciation for all forms of diversity and a willingness to work with students and staff to create an environment that fosters respect, appreciation, and values the contributions of all members of the community.
  • The ability to collaborate with personnel in security, physical plant, and academic departments.
  • Proven ability to collaborate successfully with other university offices in order to meet the needs of residential students.
