Position Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

                     

The Assistant Director of Major Gifts at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business implements comprehensive fundraising strategies to qualify new prospects including younger prospects with the greatest future philanthropic potential and to raise both restricted and unrestricted gifts in support of the mission and priorities of the school. The Assistant Director identifies, qualifies, and solicits a portfolio of current and potential donors with the capacity to make gifts up to $500,000.

 

The Assistant Director meets with prospects and donors in the New York Tri-State area, as well as other regions on the east coast.  As needed, assists with and attends cultivation events for small groups of high-level donors. Works effectively and collaboratively with internal and external colleagues to achieve Advancement team goals and objectives.

 

This position is based in New York City and may require approximately 30% travel.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet, qualify and manage a portfolio of approximately 150 prospects. Develop strong relationships to build connection with and support for the school.
  • Meet or exceed activity goals for prospect visits, qualifications, solicitations, and funds raised.
  • Close gifts of $25,000 to $500,000.
  • Meet Annual Fund dollars raised goal and partner with Annual Fund Team to drive unrestricted gift revenue from the region.
  • Develop and utilize creative methods to qualify prospects who have been identified as potential donors.
  • Record all prospect actions and activities in the University Prospect Management System. Draft compelling letters and proposals. Deliver timely and effective follow-up to prospects and donors.
  • Collaborate with Chicago Booth departments (Annual Fund, Career Services, Admissions, etc.) on identification and qualification activities.
  • Identify and contact additional prospects through collaboration with Chicago Booth research and prospect management.
  • Coordinate with campus partners in fundraising and non-fundraising areas.
  • Actively participate in building and sustaining a comprehensive regional strategy.
  • Plan, execute, and attend evening and weekend functions, as necessary.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Job Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum two years of development and fundraising experience and/or sales and marketing experience required. 
  • A background related to business or professional school education is preferred.
  • Sophisticated judgment in devising identification and qualification strategies required.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills as well as high attention to detail and follow-up required.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and tact required.
  • Demonstrated fluency in Microsoft Office products. Experience using fundraising databases or client relationship management databases is preferred, but not required.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills required, characterized by the ability to listen, to speak, and to write well, with a strong commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work well with and through others is required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to campus and/or non-campus locations for University business required.
