Position Description

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The Assistant Director is responsible for the student development program and administration of an on campus housing area of approximately 1500 students.  This area includes 10-12 apartment and residence hall buildings, and three staffing areas. Duties: supervise professional residence directors; monitor area budgets; lead educational programmatic initiatives that support the academic and personal success of students; serve as a conduct hearing officer; and assist with departmental processes and initiatives. The Assistant Director serves a wide variety of individuals and must be open to working with those from diverse backgrounds.  The Assistant Director is expected to have occasional evening and weekend commitments, to travel on behalf of the department periodically, and to work in the event of University closure or reduced operations as needed.

Student/Community Development (25%)

  • Work with department staff and students to create and maintain a living and learning environment that applies student development theory to support the mission of the University of Minnesota Duluth and Housing & Residence Life. 
  • Manage and oversee the daily operations for assigned area to include the development of a variety educational, administrative, and operational functions.  
  • Develop working knowledge of campus and community resources, educate staff on these resources, and establish partnerships that support student success and learning.
  • Serve as an educator and general resource in a compassionate manner when intervening with students regarding a variety of issues including:  college transition, academic and personal experiences, roommate and/or floor conflicts/challenges, and mental health issues. Coordinate this effort with the professional Residence Director team.
  • Assist in mediating individual and group conflicts.
  • Manage conduct process in assigned area and guide staff in the use of developmental consequences and conversations.  Serve as both a hearing officer and an appeal officer for conduct cases, distribute cases to Residence Directors and provide them guidance on procedures, due process, and implementation.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of an intentional departmental community development model. 
  • Serve as educator, consultant, and general resource for students and staff.
  • Maintain communication with parents, faculty, staff and other administrative personnel as needed.

Supervision (25%)

  • Directly supervise and evaluate three professional Residence Directors.  Hold regular and intentional one-on-one meetings.
  • Conduct annual performance appraisals and provide ongoing feedback to evaluate and address professional Residence Director performance.
  • Provide indirect supervision to 34-40 Resident Advisors (RA).
  • Participate and present training topics in fall/winter training and throughout the academic year for professional and student staff.
  • Serve as a resource on University and departmental policies and procedures. 
  • Lead departmental RA selection team.
  • Lead departmental RA training and development team.

Department Responsibilities (25%)

  • Assist Associate Director in developing and maintaining departmental processes.
  • Coordinate specific department-wide committees and functions. 
  • Assist in the selection of full-time positions in Housing & Residence Life. 
  • On a rotating basis attend UMR-ACUHO and the Oshkosh Placement Exchange conference for staff recruitment and promotion of UMD Residence Life.
  • Assist in the implementation of openings and closing throughout the year.
  • Support summer housing operations (including senior program & conferences) as needed.
  • Participate in an “on-call” rotation to provide consultation support for live-in staff and respond on-site to emergencies and crisis.
  • Assist in the execution of departmental emergency response procedures.
  • Assist Housing & Residence Life in other areas as assigned.
  • Lead departmental initiatives related to inclusion & social justice  
  • Serve as chair for departmental change team
  • Oversee annual donations drive and free store program 
  • Oversee translation of departmental documents into non-english versions
  • Lead departmental marketing team with Housing Communications Associate 
  • Assist Housing & Residence in other areas as assigned 

Administrative Responsibilities (20%)

  • Meet with Associate Director regularly and attend staff meetings including:  residence life, leadership team, and central staff.
  • Maintain and improve the physical environment of the residence halls and apartments in conjunction with housing maintenance and University custodial staff. 
  • Ensure all safety, security, and maintenance needs are reported to appropriate personnel.
  • Plan, direct, and manage administrative functions within the residence communities in assigned area.
  • Perform tasks in accordance with established Housing & Residence Life procedures and deadlines.
  • Manage and monitor operating budget, files, and any reports for area.
  • Maintain an inviting office space.

Divisional (Student Life) Responsibilities (5%)

  • Represent Housing & Residence Life on University work groups, task forces, and committees.
  • Partner with other student life staff to deliver programs and services to residential students.
  • Represent Housing & Residence Life at admission events and orientation.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in counseling, college student personnel or closely related field from an accredited institution and two years professional experience in residence life.
  • Demonstrated experience illustrating a commitment to underrepresented student populations.
  • Experience supervising graduate and/or professional staff.
  • Experience working with the student conduct process in a University setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Six years of professional experience in residence life.
  • Experience developing and implementing social justice and inclusion initiatives and trainings.
