Position Description

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning & Program Development

  1. Assist director in developing positive working relationships with members of the University community and external community.  Work collaboratively with academic units and student affairs departments to develop and coordinate resources, programs and activities for Black/African American, Hispanic/LatinX, Asian/Pacific, Multiethnic/Biracial and Native American/American Indian students at the University of Miami.
  2. Develop, implement and assess innovative programs, services and activities, which support and promote the mission of Multicultural Student Affairs.
  3. Assist with large scale office programs such as Horizons pre-orientation program, the Students of Color Symposium, and Senior Mwambo Celebration.

Advisory Responsibilities

  1. Provide support and counsel students of color experiencing academic and/or personal difficulties. Assist students in becoming more connected to university resources. 
  2. Coordinate on-going leadership development and educational sessions for student organization leaders and members.  To include 1X1 meetings, retreats, and workshops.
  3. Co-advise and provide administrative support for MSA advised student organizations.  Maintain records, correspondence and provide guidance in coordinating diverse programming initiatives.
  4. Assist in coordinating programs and services associated with cultural celebrations and awareness weeks.  To include: Hispanic Heritage Month, Black Awareness Month, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee, Asian American/Pacific Islander Month, Filipino Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, and Caribbean Awareness Week, Diversity Week, etc.
  5. Utilizes social media platforms to promote and connect students to the community and services provided by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.
  6. Develop surveys and coauthor reports on student organization leadership development and growth.
  7. Works collaboratively with other campus units and student organizations to enhance visibility for MSA events

Administrative Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for maintaining all office communication including the Unity Newsletter, social media branding, publications, and departmental brochures.
  2. Assist director in managing departmental budgets totaling over $320,000 which includes programming, book loan accounts, and various student organization, scholarship and gift accounts.  Serve as budget signatory and provide general oversight to student organization budgets.
  3. Assist director in the supervision of (1) administrative assistant, (1) graduate assistant, graduate practicum students and (10) student assistants.
  4. Assists the Director with strategic planning, grant research, fundraising activities and donor cultivation to support departmental programs and services.
  5. Serve as a resource to the University of Miami community on initiatives relating to issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  6. Assist with departmental assessment initiatives to include survey development, data analysis, and reporting.
  7. Supports and develops training and professional development opportunities for student assistants and graduate staff.
  8. Oversight of the Office’s Orgsync portal and manages student organization collaborations
  9. Serve on various advisory boards and University committees.
  10. Fulfill other responsibilities as identified and assigned by the Director of Multicultural Student Affairs.

Job Requirements

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Two years graduate assistantship work experience (completed by May 2019) in higher education or related field required.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of concepts related to college student development, identity development, and intersectional approaches to identity
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and diversity education
  • Experience working with student organizations in an advisory capacity
  • Experience using social media and technology as a training, communication and team building tool desired
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse set of campus partners
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple job requirements
  • Strong interests in developing intentional and strategic identity based programs preferred
