Position Description

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Assistant Director of Residence Education provides primary leadership in the areas of community and program development. The Assistant Director is responsible for the development of academic programs in all residence halls, coordinates the staff assigned to Living Learning Communities, and is Student Housing and Residence Life’s liaison with the academic community. The Assistant Director works closely with staff and faculty in the development and maintenance of living-learning communities and other faculty-related programs.

The Assistant Director of Residence Education will also serve as the primary advisor to the Residence Hall Association and provide oversight to the Peer Wellness Ambassador initiative.  To learn more about UAB Housing visit www.uab.edu/housing.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with faculty and hall staff to provide oversight for the management and support of living-learning environments, and participate in Assistant Director level on-call rotation. 
  • Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate the Graduate Assistant for Leadership Programs.
  • Serve as primary advisor to the Residence Hall Association (RHA). 
  • Identify and assess Living Learning Communities (LLC) learning outcomes and Residential Curriculum learning outcomes and assist in communicating the impact to the campus community.
  • Provide leadership for curriculum implementation, staff training, and staff selection as it relates to living-learning communities and student success. 
  • Serve as liaison with the relevant campus partners in regards to the implementation of academic initiatives for residential students. 
  • Effectively market living-learning and faculty-led programs and recruit students to participate through publications, presentations, and outreach activities. Serve as an ambassador for Student Housing and Residence Life the Living Learning Communities at recruitment events such as University Open Houses, UAB Days, and Orientation.  
  • Represent the department on committees with academic partners such as the Common Reading Experience and Mid-Semester Check. 
  • Seek opportunities to develop new residential academic initiatives. 
  • Represent Student Housing and Residence Life at state, regional, and national at academically focused conferences. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Educational Leadership, Counseling Required.
  • Three or more years of professional Residence Life experience, post Masters, required.
  • Prior residence life leadership experience required. Experience with faculty-led programs in a residential environment and involvement in student affairs is preferred. *Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Experience with Residential Curriculum implementation and academic-related strategy development.
  • Experience working with faculty-led programs in a residential environment.
  • Experience in developing and implementing residential academic programs. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Understanding and experience with a diverse population of college students
  • Experience working with the Residence Hall Association or other student leader groups.
  • Working knowledge of residential wellness programs. 
  • Ability to be an innovative leader
  • Ability to incorporate best practices into the organizational culture
  • Program evaluation and/or assessment experience.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and student leadership theory
  • Ability to recruit, train, and support a diverse staff
  • Ability to strengthen living-learning programs
