Position Description

The Assistant Director of Residence Life is essential to implementing the daily administrative and programming functions for the management of a comprehensive 340-bed residential living facility that supports student learning, fosters student development, and embraces diversity.  An integral member of the professional staff, the Assistant Director oversees programmatic and educational excellence within the Meredith Willson Residence Hall, while providing direct supervision to paraprofessional staff in the residence hall. This position is live-in and is provided with a furnished on-campus apartment and meal stipend. 


Job Requirements

Responsibilities:
Supervision & Leadership

  • Directly select, supervise, train, and evaluate 13 student staff members and functional supervision of a part-time Graduate Assistant.
  • Advise the Residence Hall Advisory Council to hit benchmarks related to programming, advocacy, governance, and recognition.
  • Maintain and provide content and engagement on social media including producing a weekly email newsletter for all students. 
  • Advise the Juilliard Student Council on matters relating to on-campus living.

Programming, Community Development, and Student Activities

  • Provide leadership and direction to student staff in the planning and implementation of residence hall programming, including management of the Foundations program series in collaboration with the Student Engagement Team.
  • Participate and assist theOffices of Student Affairs, International Advisement and Diversity Initiatives, Community Engagement, Disability Support Services and the Marks Center for Career Services and Entrepreneurship with the planning of school-wide events, including New Student Orientation, the Juilliard Leadership Program, the Foundations educational series, Diversity Dialogues, Career Lunch-and-Learns, etc. 
  • Serve as a primary advocate for students to AVIFresh, Juilliard’s dining service provider to ensure quality service, selection, and satisfaction. 
  • Implement the new Juilliard student wellness initiative, focusing on systematic, programmatic, and cultural offerings that increase holistic wellbeing across all of campus. 

Residence Hall Operations

  • Coordinate room selection process for new and returning students in collaboration with the Director of Residence Life, including maintaining accurate and updated records in Colleague.
  • Provide administrative support for summer conferences and summer programs, including day-to-day coordination of Summer Dance and Percussion intensives. 
  • Assist with the oversight of guest and visitor policies and adjudicate policy violation
  • Manage and maintain accurate records of the departmental budget
  • Manage the departmental email, including responding to and providing communications as necessary
  • Code of Conduct Adjudication, On-Call and Emergency Responsibilities 
  • Serve as judicial hearing officer; conduct disciplinary investigations, adjudicate violations of residence hall & school policies
  • Participate in an on-call emergency rotation to provide support to students 24/7
  • Strategic Planning
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life in the development and execution of new initiatives and programs to enhance student experience.
  • Conduct satisfaction surveys, focus groups, and larger programmatic/departmental assessment each semester and generate reports 

Professional Development

  • Effectively represent the Office and The Juilliard School at national and regional conferences, drive-in workshops, networking events, etc.
  • Stay current on trends in higher education, campus housing, college student development, and the performing arts
  • Serve on departmental and divisional committees as assigned, including the Student Engagement Team and dining operations team


Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling or related discipline
  • Minimum of two years of residence life experience, in both residence education and operations
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills and the ability to speak effectively to students, faculty, parents/guardians, school administrators and external vendors
  • Demonstrated leadership with implementation of new processes and procedures
  • Ability to exercise discretion, good judgment, and maintain confidentiality
  • Understanding of and commitment to diversity and the mission of The Juilliard School
  • Strong administrative skills with attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • Strong computer skills using software packages including, Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint and working knowledge of social networking media
  • Familiarity with assessment and evaluation tools, preferred
  • An appreciation for the performing arts, preferred
  • Direct experience in student staff supervision, preferred
