Position Description

Indiana University is one of the world’s foremost public institutions, known widely for its outstanding academic programs, research and service, a history of leadership in student affairs, Big Ten athletic programs, active student life, and beautiful campus.  Ranked as one of the top 30 public universities by US News & World Report, IU Bloomington is the flagship residential, research-intensive campus of Indiana University, with many highly ranked academic programs, including in higher education and student affairs.

The Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) has a rich history of enriching a vibrant campus community and contributing to the college union and student activities profession.  A founding member of ACUI, the IMU is one of the two largest union buildings in the country, and is in the midst of an effort to systematically update the facility, with the next step, a major renovation of dining areas scheduled to begin this summer, including the addition of new and improved programming spaces within new dining concepts.

The Indiana Memorial Union Board and student organizations have long played an important role in campus life, and both the campus and IMU strategic plans are committed to strengthening those activities and programs even further.  The Union has recently taken on additional responsibilities for student organizations and community engagement, which has led to the development of a new organizational structure, the Student Involvement and Leadership Center, and the creation of two new positions.  All of these developments connect with the IMU’s strategic theme to provide social, cultural, and cocurricular experiences that enrich students’ lives and make the IMU a destination for fun and engaging experiences.

The Assistant Director of Student Involvement & Leadership will be responsible for the management, supervision, leadership, future direction, finances, and day-to-day operation of the student programs area of the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU). This includes providing leadership for over 150 student- and staff-led events annually, supervising two entry-level program staff, graduate assistants, practicum students, and student interns and employees as appropriate.  The Assistant Director plays a leadership role in supporting Union Board, including advising the Executive Committee and individual officers and directors of the Board.  The Assistant Director of Student Involvement & Leadership will also be a member of the Union’s Leadership Team and participate in IMU, Student Affairs, and campus programs and initiatives, as needed.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum Experience: 3 years of experience in student activities, college union programming, or related field within higher education. Combinations of advanced education and experience will be considered.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • An understanding of the role of students and student development in a college union.
  • An understanding of and appreciation for the unique tradition of the Indiana Memorial Union, its mission, and its role of service to Indiana University. An ability to communicate that mission and role to the constituencies of the Indiana Memorial Union.
  • A knowledge of student programming and student leadership development.
  • The ability to advise, teach, and coach university students.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills; speaking, facilitation, and presentation skills.
  • An ability to supervise staff, including graduate assistants and professional staff
  • The ability to collaborate and develop partnerships with various university departments, faculty, staff, and student organizations.
  • Ability to easily relate with people and project a feeling of confidence and competence and handle stressful situations with ease and in a most professional manner.
  • A willingness to adjust personal schedule to needs of programming, and the necessity to observe, participate in, and evaluate programs.
  • An understanding and demonstrated commitment to programs and activities that support an inclusive and diverse campus community.
