The University of Puget Sound invites applications for an Assistant Director of Student Programs


Position Description:
In alignment with the strategic priorities of the Division of Student Affairs and the department of Student Programs and Involvement, this position will provide leadership and supervisory experience to the following areas: Orientation, Wheelock Student Center, and Puget Sound Outdoor programs. This is a unique position that focuses on the student experience through connections, exploration, and involvement, and one that requires adaptability, creativity, and strong self-management.


Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
New Student Orientation (38%)

  • Assists in planning, development, and implementation of New Student Orientation program.
  • Maintains online orientation registration and preferences.
  • Assists in recruitment coordination for Orientation Program Coordinators, leaders, and graduate interns, including application creation, applicant tracking and management, interview scheduling, personnel file creation, and leader agreements.
  • Assist in the planning and facilitation of spring and summer Orientation Leader training.
  • Assist in the development and execution of Logger Sound Launch.
  • Maintain Orientation's digital presence.
  • Manage the continued implementation of the Orientation mobile application.
  • On-call rotation during orientation.

Wheelock Student Center (30%)
  • Hire, train, and supervise twenty-two student staff in the areas of customer service, event management, cash management, and union operations.
  • Assist in development and implementation of student union identity and brand.

Puget Sound Outdoor Programs (30%)
  • Manage outdoor trip logistics and risk management.
  • Hire, train, and supervise twelve student staff in the areas of outdoor experience and outdoor leadership.
  • Provide leadership for student management of trips, the bike shop, Expeditionary (outdoor programs rental and trip center), ski shop, and the climbing program (indoor and outdoor programs).

Assessment (2%)
  • Assessment of programs and services relevant to the position.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Thirty four student staff

Budget Responsibilities
  • None

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required, with experience in College Student Personnel, Outdoor Education, Experiential Learning, Communication, Education, the Social Sciences or another related field
  • Three cycles of experience with any of the following: orientation, student union and activities, or experiential learning. Any combination of the aforementioned will be accepted
  • Strong and varied undergraduate student affairs co-curricular experience (for example, orientation, Greek life, residence life, student government, student conduct, student programing, etc.)
  • Experience with large-scale event planning and management
  • Knowledge of recruiting cycle
  • Experience designing and facilitating training for student leaders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong Microsoft Office Skills
  • This job can fluctuate and the ability to handle changing situations is a necessity
  • Be able to work independently and as a team member, take initiative and follow through on projects
  • Occasionally lift/carry 1-50 pounds
  • Abiltiy to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community

Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree preferred, with experience in College Student Personnel, Outdoor Education, Experiential Learning, Communication, Education, the Social Sciences or another related field
  • Expert in Qualtrics survey platform
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft
  • Strong research skills and experience benchmarking program attributes
  • Extensive experience at a Liberal Arts institution
  • Project management experience
  • Wilderness First Responder and CPR certifications preferred or obtained with in the first year


Compensation and Benefits: Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.
This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
