Position Description

The office of Orientation Services in the division of Enrollment Planning and Management at the University of Connecticut Storrs campus seeks applicants for a full-time position as an Assistant Director (UCP 5).  Under the direction and supervision of the director of Orientation Services, the incumbent in this position will assist with the development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the Storrs campus Orientation programs for new students and parents.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, manages and oversees assigned Orientation programs such as for Campus Change, Storrs Spring Admissions and the Storrs Campus Preview programs.
  • Assists in administering other orientation programs, such as Parent Orientation for freshmen and transfer parents and the International Orientation Program.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for recruiting, selecting, training and supervising student paraprofessionals including the Parent Orientation student team and the International Orientation Ambassadors
  • Coordinates and analyzes all Orientation program evaluations and recommends areas for improvement.
  • Develops and edits electronic and printed publications
  • Serves as a resource regarding all aspects of the university for prospective, new, and current students, including responding to electronic e-mail inquiries from students and parents
  • Gives presentations for the Orientation Office.
  • Updates and maintains the Orientation website using WordPress
  • Conducts research in the field of Orientation Transition & Retention (OTR) for benchmarking
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three years of professional experience in Orientation, Admissions or First Year Programs
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, incoming students and families.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, handle large workloads and pay careful attention to details
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and clearly; excellent writing and editing (proofreading) skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team setting
  • Strong organization and time management skills, in conjunction with the ability to work on/manage multiple tasks.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours during Orientation periods.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in student affairs or related field
  • Two or more years of professional experience working in undergraduate student Orientation
  • Experience in student development with a significant focus in the supervision of undergraduate staff and in developing and implementing programs in the higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of planning and implementing undergraduate student Orientation programs.
  • Experience using social media as a training, communication and team-building tool
  • Knowledge of the CAS standards
  • Knowledge and experience using VZ (Visual Zen) and/or other Orientation software.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and i-Movie
