Department Residence Life

Special Conditions:  This position also provides project management oversight for the Residence Life facilities on the University of Memphis Lambuth Campus (Jackson, TN)

Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  May need to work/travel beyond normal work schedule

Working Conditions:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to stand; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Positions Supervised:  Facilities staff and student workers

Duties & Responsibilities: 

- Develops and coordinates the five year renovation and maintenance plan for approximately 800,000 square feet of facility space.

- Ensures efficient and effective services are delivered by supervising and training Residence Life maintenance staff. Monitors work orders, determining level of response required. Reviews all charges for services to ensure proper budget controls are followed.

- Promotes optimum service delivery by departmental employees by providing assistance with the development and coordination of training workshops for maintenance, custodial and support staff.Manages the development and implementation of policies and procedure for department staff including handling of hazardous chemicals, safety standards, and appropriate certifications.

- Manages the inventory of all equipment and materials needed in the general maintenance and housekeeping areas; authorizes and approves purchase of additional equipment and supplies within budgetary authority, following University procurement policies and procedures. Assists with developing efficient inventory systems for supplies and materials.

- Manages the liaison between Residence Life, Physical Plant and Planning, external contractors, and University personnel in matters relating to facilities.

- Ensures efficient and effective services by monitoring activities of housing custodial personnel and advising their supervisors when needed.

- Responsible for the Residence Halls’ self-service laundry facilities, ensuring the proper number and location of machines and supervising the maintenance of laundry related equipment.

- Ensures a pest-free living environment in all residence halls and apartment facilities by monitoring the performance of pest control efforts.

- Contributes to the proper functioning of all elevators within the Department by monitoring all service calls and routine maintenance work and by preventing vandalism.

- Ensures the safety of all residents within the Residence Life facilities by assisting with the development of comprehensive residence hall and apartment emergency procedures.

- Promotes a safe environment for all residents, residence hall staff and other University personnel by eliminating safety hazards which could cause injury or illness.

- Meets the requirement for accountability of housing equipment and furnishings during the annual inventory, by maintaining accurate and thorough record keeping and reporting procedures throughout the year. Assists with the development of inventory processes and appropriate training for residence life staff.

- Serves on division and university committees as needed. Represents the department and university with external constituents and vendors. And other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Minimum Position Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of appropriate experience. Relevant experience may substitute for education requirement.
Requires valid Driver’s License.
