Position Description

BASIC FUNCTION:

Develop community, provide education, and respond directly to students and staff within a designated community. Ensure programs, services, and responses align with the mission and priorities of Kent State University, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Department of Residence Services. Reports to Director, Residence Life or designed supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Provide leadership, formal supervision, and training for assigned staff, including but not limited to, residence hall directors, graduate assistants, and student staff within residential areas.

Assist with business processes, operations, and financial oversight for assigned areas.

Develop and foster communities within a designated area of campus.

Assist Residence Hall Directors in responding and/or coordinating responses to student behavior, crisis, and community issues; directly respond to issues when needed/appropriate.

Develop, coordinate, and assist with evaluation of programmatic efforts, academic initiatives, student engagement initiatives, conferences, and summer programs for assigned area.

Serve as liaison with offices including Office of Student Conduct, Kent State University Police Services, and other key offices.

Provide oversight for or assist with department programs and initiatives; coordinate communication/involvement across the department.

Make determinations for student petition for contract release within assigned area.

Serve on a rotation for consultation and guidance after hours.

Coordinate projects and serve on department, division and university committees as assigned.

Evaluate and assess processes to ensure best practice and continuous improvement.

Assist with student recruitment and admissions events.

Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in relevant field.
Four years of experience in student housing or related field.
Must possess three years of supervisory experience.
Must be able to work nontraditional hours as needed, including evenings and weekends.

License/Certification:

Not applicable.

Preferred Qualifications:

Professional experience as a residence hall director. Experience coordinating with student conduct office, mediation, and/or counseling services.

Knowledge Of:

Community development *
Student development theory
Team building and group formation *
Cultural competence including multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills
Title IX, FERPA, and other relevant laws, policies, and regulations

Skill In:

Supervising employees at varied levels
Training and development
Personal computer applications
Written and interpersonal communication and interpersonal skills *

Ability To:

Work in highly complex, detail-oriented compliance environment
Multi-task while managing multiple projects and assignments
Demonstrate ability to successfully collaborate with others *
Engage in independent, self-directed work *
Foster collaborative relationships
Navigate ambiguous situations with attention to student needs *
Remain current in the field
Work nontraditional hours as needed

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Light work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. May require travel from building to building and off campus frequently.
