Position Description

BASIC FUNCTION:

Provide leadership for residential safety and security, residence hall conduct, student behavior, and conflict resolution; work one-on-one with students for support and resources during crisis, and assist with coordination of crisis response department wide.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Responsible for supervision and leadership of the student and full-time staff assigned to the residential safety and security area

Provide leadership for the restorative justice/educational conduct process; includes implementation, training, and evaluation of all aspects of the process

Oversight of the residence hall conduct case management; including referral to hall staff, Office of Student Conduct, Student Mediation Services, and/or direct adjudication/response

Coordinate care of individual students identified departmentally and/or via the university’s multi-disciplinary teams; coordination includes one-on-one support of students, facilitating applicable referral processes, and communication with university support services, community agencies and providers as appropriate

Train and evaluate staff involved in the residential conduct process

Develop and implement protocols for safety, security, and emergency response impacting the residence halls and surrounding areas

Facilitate and coordinate residential community outreach programs

Provide on-call assistance and consultation for crisis response

Serve as liaison to offices including but not limited to Office of Student Conduct, Kent State University Police Services, and Student Mediation Services

Serve on related departmental, divisional, and university committees and task forces

Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in higher education, counseling, social work or related human services field

Three years student services experience (advising, residence life, campus safety, conflict resolution/mediation, and/or student conduct) and three years of supervision experience for a total of three years of experience minimum.

Must also be able to work non-traditional hours.

License/Certification:

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in university student housing and/or student conduct

Previous experience working with individuals with mental health issues in a fast-paced setting

Experience responding to crises; crisis intervention training or exposure

Conflict resolution or mediation training

Knowledge Of:

Student Development Theory

Restorative justice practices or conflict resolution*

Safety practices and concerns in higher education setting*

Legal issues in higher education; i.e. Title IX and Clery Act

Skill In:

Written communication and interpersonal skills

Conflict resolution and/or mediation*

Time management, organizational, and problem solving skills

Supervision of others

Report writing and documentation

Development and facilitation of training programs *

Utilization of applicable software *

Ability To:

Respond calmly and quickly to challenging situations

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
