Position Summary and Responsibilities Vassar College is seeking a creative and visionary student affairs professional who can support the highest quality Residential Life program. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Associate Dean/Director is responsible for leadership, planning and overall management of residence life programs, student conduct, student housing, and budget. This position is responsible for long range planning and implementation of Residential Life process including but not limited to writing, implementing and enforcing policies and practices; staff hiring, training and management. The Associate Dean/Director serves on leadership team within the Dean of Students area and manages a housing program of 9 residential houses, 3 apartment areas and one co-operative which house 2400+ students from across the world. The Associate Dean/Director of Residential Life supervises the Associate Director of Residential Life and five (5) House Advisors and indirect supervision of 200 student leaders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative Duties

 

 

  • Will act as deputy to the Dean of Students, and represent the Dean of Students Office
  • Serve as Back-up Administrator on-call (BAOC)
  • Supervise the Residential Life Office
  • Oversee residential life information
  • Oversee the development and implementation of residential education curriculum.
  • Provide leadership and coordination of residential life programming model
  • Evaluate current residential life software use
  • Serves as member of Student Support Network (Behavioral Intervention Team)
  • Establish and supervise residential life safety and security procedures in coordination with the Office of Safety & Security.
  • Develop and administer the residential life budgets of $941,000
  • Oversee conduct policies and procedures and coordinate training and enforcement of conduct policies and Title IX compliance within Residential Life.
  • Prepare written reports, presentations, campus communications, marketing strategies, follow-through and outreach.
  • Develop and implement long range strategic planning for Residential Life
  • Oversee the coordination of Residential Life and Summer Programs as related to the use of residence halls.
  • Provide leadership and management of software systems which supports the work of Residential Life
  • Oversee assessment of various residential life program and provide recommendations for changes.
  • Maintain ongoing and sustained coordination and collaboration with Facilities Operations


Management Duties

 

 

  • Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate Residential Life administrative staff
  • In collaboration with the Dean of Students, the Dean of the College and the Dean of the Faculty, provide leadership and vision to the Faculty House Fellows Program (Live-in Faculty)
  • In coordination with the Dean of Students, oversee the Administrator on-Call (AOC) and Backup Administrator on-Call (BAOC)


Campus Duties

 

 

  • Support the development of an inclusive and equitable community along with campus partners
  • Oversight and direction for Transitions, a program that provides essential support for first generation and low income students
  • Coordinate with other College departments to resolve student, staff, parent, and/or general public problems and concerns.
  • Serve on appointed College committees as designated by the Dean of Students or Dean of the College.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

 


Qualifications
Knowledge , Skills, and Abilities: Experience working at a liberal arts college in a small, diverse, and engaged community Exhibits creative and high-energy capability in Student Services, in particular inclusive communities, residential education and housing, and student conduct. Ability to work effectively with a diverse student and staff community. Demonstrated maturity, flexibility, professionalism and sound judgment. Knowledge of issues and concerns pertaining to a diverse undergraduate population, conduct, Title IX compliance, and awareness of issues particular to a small residential college Demonstrated commitment to social justice education and equity and diversity initiatives Familiarity with best practices for residential life and assessment of current needs Experience with staff supervision, training, and professional development Knowledge of case management software (Maxient) Demonstrated effective managerial, supervisory, communication and interpersonal skills. Strong oral and written communication skills. Sensitivity and flexibility in dealing with complex problems and situations. Ability to work autonomously and cooperatively within the department and the larger College community. Basic understand of facility operations/management Qualifications: Master's Degree in student development, higher education administration or a related field 7+ years of progressively responsible student affairs and residential life experience. The successful candidate will have demonstrated effectiveness in motivating, leading, and supervising in an inclusive environment; have applicable crisis management skills; experience managing college disciplinary systems; have excellent speaking, writing and organizational skills; experience supervising professional and student staff; and proven ability to work collaboratively in an academic community. Preference will be given to applicants with superior team building skills, and experience in supervising professional staff, as well as developing, implementing and evaluating residential life initiatives.
