ASSOCIATE DEAN OF STUDENTS

Nature of the position

The Associate Dean of Students is a full-time academic professional staff member in the Office of the Dean of Students, a department in Student Affairs. The Associate Dean of Students reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Student Support and Advocacy. The Associate Dean supervises a staff of Assistant Deans and a Senior Assistant Dean/Case Manager within the Student Assistance Center and Off-Campus Community Living (formerly Tenant Union) units. The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Dean include serving on the Behavioral Intervention Team and Threat Assessment Team, directing the daily operations of the Office of the Dean of Students, coordinating student emergency services, and participating in a variety of university committees, activities and events. The Associate Dean will work to address the needs of students who struggle in such areas as psychological health, physical health, crime victimization, relationship issues, economic concerns, and social adjustment through a variety of interventions, referrals, and follow-up services. Where appropriate, the Associate Dean will be asked to represent the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Student Support and Advocacy at meetings on and off campus. Incumbent is responsible for implementation of an assessment strategy for the Student Assistance Center, Off-Campus Community Living, and the Behavioral Intervention Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct the daily operations of the Student Assistance Center and Off-Campus Community Living in the Office of the Dean of Students, including staff supervision and evaluation, budget operations and management, policy/procedure development, and publications review.
  • Serve on the Behavioral Intervention Team for students and the Threat Assessment Team for non-students.
  • Coordinate the Emergency Dean Program including selection, training, and supervision of staff who maintain "after-hours" on-call responsibilities to assist in crisis intervention involving university students (e.g., accidents, injuries, assaults, hospitalization).
  • Develop and coordinate policies and procedures relative to all students; oversee annual production of student related policies and other documents.
  • Provide advocacy on behalf of students seeking assistance with problem resolution.
  • Represent the Dean of Student Support & Advocacy on university and Student Affairs committees, as directed.
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate periodic/special operations reports and surveys.
  • Serves as liaison with community leaders including Chief of Police, City Council, and community service organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Outstanding communication skills including the ability to impart complex information with clarity to a range of constituencies (faculty, students, administrators, parents, law enforcement, etc.) as well as to media outlets.
  • Experience in new program development and bringing about change in a thoughtful manner as well as proven skill in building consensus among peers, subordinates and others.
  • Capacity to function effectively as part of a senior management team including ability to think strategically, display an incisive intellect and willingness to actively explore, propose and critique new ideas, combined with the professionalism to fully support and execute the decision of the team regardless of one's personal point of view.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze operating policies and procedures and formulate recommendations to improve service quality and efficiency.
  • Evidence of visibility and influence within a campus community.

Required Experience

Master's degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, counseling, or related field required. Minimum 7-10 years of increasingly responsible experience in Student Affairs including a minimum of five years of experience at the Director level or above.

Preferred Experience

Received training or served on a threat assessment team. Working knowledge of current assessment instrumentation and survey design and ability to construct recommendations from evaluative and assessment data.

Salary Statement

Salary will commensurate with experience.
