Position Description

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is Seeking: Associate Director, Career Development

The Associate Director manages and leads the Career Development function for the Center for Career and Professional Development and oversees a liaison service delivery model, ensuring a career liaison for each school and CLASS Dean. The Associate Director coordinates the team’s efforts and will assess the effectiveness of programs and services with the goal of continuous improvement. The Associate Director leads the team’s outreach efforts to foster collaboration and partnerships on-campus that support career programming and service delivery.

(CLASS)- Clustered Learning, Advocacy, and Support for Students is a comprehensive approach to the student experience at Rensselaer. Through ongoing support, guidance, and co-curricular activities, CLASS connects students to a network of faculty, staff, and other students, ensuring that they are part of a strong community of learners. As students strive to become the leaders of tomorrow, CLASS helps them develop the intellectual agility, multicultural sophistication, and global awareness that will enable them to change the world.


Job Requirements

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Requires strong organizational skills. 
  • Requires excellent customer service skills
  • Requires ability to work effectively under pressure and meet established goals and objectives.
  • Requires ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Requires strong computer skills and knowledge.
  • Required demonstrated advanced skills in counseling, interpersonal communication and written communication focusing on a traditional college-age student population
  • Demonstrated mentoring skills and ability to effectively manage a team 
  • Ability to identify a new idea or concept and bring it to fruition

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree (emphasis in student affairs, counseling, human resource management or related field) 
  • A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in fields related to student programming with a preference for experience in a career services or student services role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in creating and delivering programs for students
  • Experience with Banner or a university student record system

Other Position Requirements
Work is performed in normal office conditions. Occasional outdoor travel between campus locations is required as well as some long-distance travel. Work is fast paced and demanding, and subject to irregular hours.
