Position Description

With a dual reporting line to the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) and Student Affairs, this position contributes to campus diversity and inclusion goals by providing leadership for and advancing programs affecting the quality of campus life for students of color, international students, and veterans.  This position is accountable to carry out the vision of MCLA's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals. This position plans, implements and assesses programs and initiatives to meet the diverse needs of our students by advising student clubs and organizations with their programs and coordinating programs developed by the Office of the CDO. Promotes persistence towards graduation through personal advisement, referrals and intervention, and community inclusion and outreach. 

Chief Diversity Office Responsibilities:

In consultation with the CDO, collaborate with key offices and academic departments to support the transition and successful integration of students of color, international students, veterans, and diverse populations into Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Connect students with scholarship, internship, service and leadership opportunities and award programs.
Promote and assist in the development of policies, procedures and programs that assure the well-being and development of students of color and international students, affirm human dignity, and cultural pluralism across campus.
Provide operational leadership for the coordination of multicultural and international related programming, including but not limited to Black History Month, Latino Month, and Asian Awareness Month, Stripes Ceremony, etc., as directed by the CDO.
Assist the CDO in assessing the educational and supportive needs of offices and departments as it relates to helping the college create a multi-cultural living-learning environment for all students. 
Coordinate and advance the dialogue around race through the Campus Conversations on Race (CCOR) and Intergroup Dialogue programs (IDG). Develop and maintain a robust team of trained student and staff facilitators to present regular CCOR programming in and out of the classroom and engage in IDG education and training.
Create and implement programs and initiatives that promote increased multicultural competence and diversity awareness within the MCLA community.
Coordinate and chair MCLA award processes related to diverse student populations, such as the Mitch West Scholarship, Margaret Hart Scholarship, Multicultural Achievement Award and others in collaboration with appropriate academic and support departments.
Represent the Office of the CDO as requested.
Other duties as assigned.

Student Affairs Responsibilities:

Advise students of color and international students to facilitate cultural awareness and adaptation, personal advancement and academic success through outreach and development of ongoing relationships with students.  Assess student needs, connect them to campus support networks, and provide guidance and support.
Promote and support students of color and international students' integration into the region through trips, inter-institution connections, transportation, etc.
Advance the work of the Multicultural Resource Center (MERC). Coordinate programs through MERC to advance personal and campus-wide cultural awareness and development. Hire, train, and supervise MERC student employees.
Serve as organizational and program advisor to students of color and international related student clubs and organizations.  Support organizational needs and programming. 
Coordinate the MCLA Veteran's Resource Center (VRC) and its steering committee; hire, train and supervise student employees for the VRC. Develop connections with student veterans and coordinate a robust program of support programs and experiences, working with the VRC steering committee and the CDO.
Coordinate and implement Orientation programming for international exchange students.
Ensure programs and initiatives within area of responsibility are assessed regularly and improved with data driven decision making.
Assist with division-wide programs coordinated by Student Affairs, including new student orientation, annual student leadership conference, etc.
Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Master's degree in higher education, social justice education, counseling, student affairs, or related program is required.
3 -5 years of experience working with college students required, ideally in a student development or advising capacity.
Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of student development, social justice education, and the needs of diverse populations in higher education is required.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to initiate collaborative work with diverse students, faculty and staff.
Experience in student program development, budget management and contract negotiations.
Demonstrated ability to influence the creation, implementation, and management of a balanced array of programs which reflect students' interests and educational needs.
Proven ability to assess program impact on student learning, including use of quantitative and qualitative data.
Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed to fulfill the job responsibilities.
