Position Description

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Adele H. Stamp Student Union – Center for Campus Life (STAMP) at the University of Maryland is seeking an Associate Director of Facilities and Operations. As a member of STAMP’s leadership team, this position oversees all building operations for the department, including direct supervision of three Assistant Directors and indirect supervision of their respective teams of coordinators, facilities staff, administrative staff, and graduate assistants.  

More specifically, the Associate Director oversees the Facilities, IT Services, and Event and Guest Services units within STAMP.  These areas break down as follows:

  • This position is the primary steward of STAMP and auxiliary facilities and works to accomplish this with colleagues in the Housekeeping and Maintenance areas and those working in sustainability, shipping and receiving, and construction areas. The Associate Director leads regular facilities assessments, manages all large scale renovation and construction projects, and provides long-term planning related to facilities.  The Facilities area has one Assistant Director, approximately 30 Housekeeping staff, and six Maintenance staff.
  • The IT Services staff under the direction of this position provides meeting support, technology support for daily operations, digital signage, telecommunications, and software platforms that support STAMP’s programming and services.  The IT Unit has one Assistant Director, five full-time staff, and a number of graduate assistants and undergraduate student employees.
  • The Event and Guest Services portfolio includes the day-to-day management of meetings and conferences, Stamp Information Desk, Ticket Office, administering policies associated with building and campus space use, and emergency management. This area employs one Assistant Director who oversees seven full-time professional staff members as well as a number of graduate assistants and undergraduate student employees.

The Associate Director also supervises the day-to-day operations of Stamp including interfacing with building vendors which include: Campus Dining Services, food court vendors, the University Book Center, a bank, a copy and design service, Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life, and a UPS store.  The position is charged with serving as one of STAMP’s departmental liaisons and contract administrators. Additionally, the individual in this position serves as the department liaison for agreements and Memorandum of Understanding with Conference & Visitor Services, New Student Orientation, Enrollment Management, Dining Services and Catering, Business Services, Graduate Student Government, and Student Government Association. The individual represents STAMP in supporting University-wide programs and ensuring that institutional policies are upheld in program execution.  The incumbent creates strategic goals and metrics to support the measurement of success, capacity building, and learning for students and staff members and engages graduate and professional staff in rich exchanges and collaborative work. The Associate Director must be a critical thinker with interest in using data and feedback to inform our practice and partnerships with other agencies on campus and serve as one of the senior leaders of STAMP with shared responsibility for the management of departmental resources and goals.


Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree within student affairs, counseling, business management, higher education, or related field of study required. Strong background in facility and fiscal management, personnel and human resource management, business and contract management, facility renovation and ongoing maintenance, and in the use of technology to support Union operations. This position requires at least 8-10 years of full-time experience in higher education or a related field. This person must show thoughtful and informed leadership on issues facing practitioners in higher education including: equity, inclusion, & social justice on college campuses; the balance between respecting freedom of speech and support for communities; and strategies for promoting health and well-being through social engagement.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate is a progressive leader, both creative and strategic, a strong manager, and a critical thinker. The incumbent should have strong assessment, technology, and facilities management experience and will be capable of advocating policies and practices that advance student engagement and learning outside of the classroom, especially through student employment opportunities.
