Position Description

The Associate Director for Multicultural Affairs is part of a collaborative team of Student Life professionals and assists in increasing the access, retention and success of historically underrepresented students including racial and ethnic minorities.  This position is a full-time, 12-month position with primary responsibility for advising both American ethnic minority and international students.  This position assists in the coordination of transition and retention strategies for multicultural student populations to address differentials in attrition and retention.  The position also works closely with The Office of Admission as well as other campus partners to develop a comprehensive infrastructure that effectively supports the growth and advancement of students.  The position coordinates and implements programs and services sponsored by the Center that informs the general campus of issues related to cultural diversity and assists in the enhancement of a culture that welcomes and celebrates all students.


Job Requirements

Advise American ethnic minority and international students:  Assist and advise students on matters and concerns that may arise regarding academics, finances, homesickness, student life, and social and work-related matters.  Connect students to those on campus and in the greater community who can provide a support base for international and minority students.  Help foster the development of a strong social, academic, and professional network for international and minority students on campus.

 

Organizes and facilitates the New International Student Orientation:  Coordinate Fall term orientation session designed to introduce international students to American culture, life on Hanover campus, academics at Hanover, and other details related to their stay in the U.S.  This category includes selecting and training I-Pals, student volunteers who assist international students with transitional matters, to assist with the orientation process.

 

Coordinates events for the Haq Center for Cross-Cultural Education:  Plans, organizes, and conducts diversity outreach projects (e.g., Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Black History Month, International Education Week and the International Club Banquet).  Collaborates with other student organizations in providing a variety of cultural experiences for the campus community.

 

Collects data and manages budgets:  Collects appropriate institutional data on current and past international and minority students and maintains that data in an accurate and updated format. 

 

Other Responsibilities:  As a component of the Student Life team this position may include additional ancillary OSL duties, including but not limited to serving as the advisor to the LGBTQ+ Center.
