Position Description

Associate Director of Community Development and Fraternity & Sorority Life 

Primary Function: Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Associate Director will lead efforts to enhance a cohesive community for several student populations as they transition to represent both the St. John's University and Fraternity/Sorority Life, these include: students affiliated within fraternity and sorority chapters recognized by the university, students who live independently in the campus neighborhood, and those students in transition from resident student to living independently off­ campus. The Associate Director will be responsible for implementation of a comprehensive community development strategy which includes: programming, leadership development, civic participation and application of community standards. The Associate Director encourages collaboration with faculty, alumni, and other community members and neighbors among the outlying Queens community.


Job Requirements

Community Development: The Associate Director will guide and implement efforts to foster the development of community among off campus students by:

Establishing new services for St. John's University off-campus students and conducting outreach and programming for off-campus
Implementing of programs and services in conjunction with other University offices that promote community, scholarship, leadership, and
Educating students about university policies as they apply to students off campus and local city ordinances
Continuing to build and strengthen neighborhood relations by facilitating dialogue and helping students promote civic citizenship to create a positive quality oflife for everyone living in the neighborhood.
Serving as a liaison with Division of Student Affairs partners, Health Services, Alumni Affairs, Athletics, Residence Life, Dining Services, Government and Community Relations, and Public Safety regarding issues pertaining to Greek Life and students living independently in the immediate community.
Serving on cross-functional work teams to promote community development associated with leadership training, community programming, off-campus living, new student orientation, and student based policies and community standards

Fraternity and Sorority Life: Functioning as part of a team responsible for the advisement, recruitment, new member, and other educational programs for St. John's 40 fraternities and sororities, including:

Evaluating the council and recruitment
Providing advisement to the African and Latino Fraternity and Sorority Alliance (ALFSA), the Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC), and the National Panhellenic Council (NPC).
Collaborating with alumni, students, staff, faculty, and others in assessing the needs and outcomes of a values-based Fraternity and Sorority Life reflecting the mission of St. John's University.
Fostering trusting relationships with constituents who include: chapter members, parents, alumni, headquarters representatives, and chapter
Assisting in the revision and advancement of risk management and new member education programs.
Assessing procedures to evaluate leadership development and educational programming within the Greek
Revising and implementing of a fraternity and sorority community standards program in collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct. This program will include educational programming sessions which focus on: community services, organizational policy and system of accountability, philanthropy, and the promotion of academic excellence by the FSL
Ongoing assessment of emerging best practices within the field of Fraternity and Sorority Life, community relations and making recommendations for how to incorporate these
Overseeing and advising of chapter and council
Supervise student workers and graduate

This position requires evening and weekend work.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.

Desired skills: Strong communication skills with young adults, ability to work well under pressure and maintain composure, experience working in a multi-cultural environment, exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy, planning and organizational ability, workshop presentation skills, computer literacy and/or knowledge of database/information systems extremely helpful. Adherence to best practices, including AFA core competencies, ACPA, and NASPA.
