Position Description

The Division of Student Affairs is currently seeking candidates for the position of Associate Director of Operations for the Iowa State University (ISU) Memorial Union (MU). Reporting to the Director of the MU and serving on the Senior Leadership Team, the Associate Director is responsible for administrative oversight of the ISU MU facility and ensures building operations and related facilities are maintained to the highest standards.

The MU at ISU is a 316,713 square foot multipurpose facility that serves as the center for student life, co-curricular activities, as well as serves as an event and meeting venue for the campus and local community. The MU opened in 1928 and boasts 11 additions to the original structure to meet growing student needs. The building houses many campus partners include ISU dining, Bookstore, Legal Services, Printing, International Student Services, Study Abroad, Veteran's Services, 600-stall parking ramp, the Student Activities Center, a bowling center, an art studio, a live music venue, and 27 meeting and event spaces.

The Associate Director oversees and provides guidance for general building operations, budget and policies, and negotiates agreements with ISU Procurement to secure services with ISU authorized vendors for MU facilities, grounds, and maintenance projects. Working with the Facilities Maintenance Manager, the Associate Director manages building projects related to “green” and sustainability initiatives, deferred maintenance, work order requests, construction projects, mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) systems replacement and upgrades, roofing, paint, carpentry, maintenance, remodeling, renovation, MU Parking Ramp, and grounds. This position also oversees Information Technology (IT) for the MU and directly oversees security and emergency management procedures and protocols. The Associate Director works with the Assistant Director of Hospitality Services to provide efficient, high quality, and service oriented event management and facilities to all guests; and works in coordination with the MU Student Team Trainers and Director to train student staff to meet the customer service and operational needs. The Associate Director works with the Director on assessment initiatives for services, operations, facilities, and students working within operations. Direct reports to the Associate Director include the Assistant Director for Hospitality Services, Manager of Facilities Maintenance, Technology Manager, and the Parking and Transportation Attendant.

The successful candidate will possess a strong working knowledge of the operations, facilities, project management and event management systems for college unions; a basic knowledge of trends in risk management, legislative issues in higher education, as well as a working knowledge of assessment practices and approaches; and knowledge, experience, and skills supervising professionals and advising students in a college setting.

The MU is the hub of the Iowa State campus. With over two million visitors each year, the MU hosts thousands of events and provides hundreds of outstanding programs for ISU and the surrounding community. In order to provide top quality programs and services, the MU hires only the best service-oriented, team-focused, and solution-focused individuals. If you have the desire to be a part of a fun and growing team, have a positive mindset toward your work, and are self-motivated, we encourage you to apply!
