Position Description

Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement

UIC is among the nation's preeminent urban public research universities, a Carnegie RU/VH research institution, and the largest university in Chicago. This fall, UIC enrollment reached 31,683 students making it the fourth year of record-breaking enrollment for the university. UIC has one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation and is designated as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPSI) and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). UIC currently has the strongest enrollment momentum in Illinois. Through its 15 colleges, UIC produces nationally and internationally recognized multidisciplinary academic programs in concert with civic, corporate and community partners worldwide, including a full complement of health sciences colleges. In 2019, UIC expects to create its 16th college by acquiring Chicago's John Marshall Law School. With over 600 staff members and 1,100 student employees, Student Affairs is comprised of 25 departments responsible for providing programs, services, and facilities that support student engagement, learning, and success.

The AVC for Student Engagement is a newly created position that supports a broad range of projects on behalf of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The AVC provides oversight in planning, developing, implementing and advising on programs, services, activities and processes for students in their non-academic life at the university, including fraternity and sorority life, student organizations, civic engagement, leadership development, new student programs, orientation, commuter services, and other student resource center areas.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Student Engagement Programming

  • Responsible for administrative and programmatic oversight and coordination of the following units, departments, and offices: Fraternity and Sorority Life, Center for Student Involvement, Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, Commuter Resource Center, New Student and Family Programs, and the UIC Experience.
  • Provide strategic vision in support of a comprehensive and integrated student engagement program to enhance students' sense of belonging at the university. Work with partners to identify and address needs of harder-to-engage populations of students (e.g., commuter students, international students, nontraditional students, distance learners).
  • Provide leadership for initiatives that further UIC's commitment to access and inclusion.
  • Enhance learning and personal development of students in social, multicultural, co-curricular, and experiential opportunities through various campus and community based activities.
  • Lead assessment, staff development, strategic planning, promotion, and development of student engagement programming.

Student Engagement Partnerships

  • Work collaboratively across campus to provide support and services for underserved populations of students.
  • Partner with Academic Enrollment Services on initiatives related to the recruitment and retention of a diverse student population.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, campus administrative leadership, and faculty.
  • Collaborate with academic departments, Deans, Directors and other key campus partners to support university initiatives.

Student Engagement Management

  • Attend meetings with the Vice Chancellor when appropriate -and on the Vice Chancellor's behalf when the Vice Chancellor is not available -lending support and follow-up as required.
  • Respond to emergency/ crisis situations as needed, including coordination of communication with healthcare providers and families.
  • Develop and manage assigned budgets which include working with direct reports to develop and manage an annual budget.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Master's Degree required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated administrative and leadership capabilities including as a Director within a university environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret federal, state and institutional financial aid guidelines.
  • Demonstrated effective use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills, including an ability to write persuasively and clearly with a focus on organization and presentation to a variety of constituencies.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and proven ability to keep track of and meet numerous deadlines; ability to handle multiple tasks in a timely manner and effectively re-prioritize responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for understanding complex issues and the ability to translate and simplify them for key audiences.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Strong research skills and a demonstrated ability to attend carefully to both factual details and strategy.
  • High level of discretion and excellent judgment; ability to work with and manage confidential information.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and plan workshops and conferences.
