Position Description

POSITION PURPOSE:

Reporting directly to Bemidji State University’s Provost and Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President for Student Life and Success (AVPSLS) provides leadership for programs and services that support the mission of the University and College as well as their Academic and Student Affairs. This position is involved in crisis planning and coordinating and provides an opportunity to influence the climate of the student experience. In addition to direct supervision of Student Life services and activities, the AVPSLS serves as a key leader in collaborative efforts with other areas of the University and College, including student retention, and participates directly in Academic Affairs initiatives. The AVPSLS will also contribute significantly to strategic planning, facility and budget management, staff supervision and the strengthening of a safe, healthy and inclusive learning environment for the Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the supervision of the Provost and Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs, serve in partnership with the Executive Director of Enrollment Management in areas that cross over between Student Affairs and Enrollment Management units.  
  • Oversee administrative, programmatic, and coordinating functions of the following units and offices: the American Indian Resource Center, Housing and Residence, Gillett Wellness Center, Hobson Memorial Union, Veterans Services, the Center for Student Health and Counseling, Aramark Food Service and the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Chair the Student Retention Work Group.
  • Lead university and college efforts to strategically advance and promote diversity, equity and inclusion, student access to success and training and resources.
  • Partner effectively with faculty and staff to develop opportunities for experiential learning in Academic and Student Affairs.
  • Co-lead student learning outcome assessment planning, strategy, and implementation for co-curricular and extra-curricular contexts.
  • Serve as the chief conduct officer for the University.
  • Chair the Emotional and Physical Health Committee.
  • Collaborate with Vice Presidents, deans, and other staff to promote and implement the strategic direction established through the University’s strategic plan relating to student persistence and retention.
  • Represent the interests and resources of Student Life in a variety of contexts (e.g. enrollment management, budget planning, risk management, student activities) of interaction with students and, as appropriate, parents.
  • Develop, implement, monitor and revise policies and procedures related to the student life and success functional area under the supervision of the Provost and Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs.
  • Serve as a member of University and Student Life committees as appointed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Serve as administrative liaison for dining services and Veteran’s Affairs as well as ex-officio administrative advisor for the BSU student senate.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in higher education administration, student affairs or other relevant field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in higher education administration, student affairs or relevant field that demonstrates increasing administrative, supervisory and performance management responsibilities.
  • Understanding, support and commitment to a diverse higher education environment.
  • Ability to relate to and work with a range of professional staff, faculty, senior administrative colleagues, students, parents and guardians, alumni, and off-campus constituencies.

Preferred:

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field.
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible management experience in Student Affairs or other relevant experience in higher education.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication, team building and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in program development, working with university auxiliary services, collective barging environments, and utilizing technological innovations to enhance operations in Student Affairs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of creative and innovative programs that enhance the relationship between the Academic Affairs and Student Life and Success units.
  • Knowledge of national trends affecting universities and colleges.
