Position Summary
(Classified as: Student Services Professional III)

Full-time position available on or after July 1, 2022 in Basic Needs.

Under the general direction of the Care Manager, the Basic Needs Lead is part of the Basic Needs department providing direct student service support, as well as operational program coordination for students dealing with basic needs insecurities. With a primary emphasis on providing student care support the Lead is responsible for case in-take, assignment and tracking through the completion of a report. The Lead maintains accurate and timely information and resources, oversees care submissions, assigns student care cases to the Care and CalFresh Coordinators, and is responsible for preparing reports and documentation. The incumbent exercises discretionary decision-making and is empowered to make appropriate decisions on behalf of the unit and in a manner which best supports student holistic well-being and aligns with policy, regulation, guidance, etc.

In addition, the incumbent supports the development and implementation of Basic Needs related including: Campus Cares, CalFresh, Warrior Food Pantry, Food Distribution, and Emergency Housing. This position is considered essential to the continuity of university operations. The incumbent works primarily on-site with some remote work including occasional evenings.

Job Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:

 

  • Coordinate all aspects of the student care management function within Basic Needs, including the assignment and monitoring of student caseloads to the Care and CalFresh coordinators.
  • Responsible for recognizing specific program needs and for developing approaches for possible implementation.
  • Responsible for oversight of student care case load management of entire Basic Needs/Care team: intake, assign, follow-up with case leads, coordinate with Care Manager, update databases, and develop reports.
  • Collect, prepare and compile all student Basic Needs/Care case reports and submit report to the University, Chancellor's Office and others as needed.
  • Train and supervise Basic Needs/Care Coordinators (SSP II), and ensure reporting, tracking, student care processes are following all local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Oversee the implementation, maintenance, and development of Maxient for Basic Needs/Care programs.
  • Manage the system configuration and management of Basic Needs and Care through Maxient.
  • Independently provide comprehensive advisement and support to students dealing with food and housing insecurities.
  • Analyze individual student or group situations thoroughly, perceive the available alternatives and their implications and must formulate and verbalize this information to students and Basic Needs/Care Coordinators.
  • Meet with students to assess the level of crisis and provide campus- based resources and referrals and make any external referrals when needed.
  • Assist students in applying for on-campus emergency grant aid programs and other forms as needed.
  • Use own judgement to provide intervention for students with immediate definable needs such as COVID-19, shelter, food, financial, transportation, etc., or refer to Care Manager and other departments as needed.
  • Coordinate support services, including referral and liaison with Stanislaus County, Center for Human Services, social services, mental health services, housing agencies, financial support agencies, food services, etc. for students in need.
  • Provide housing navigation support to students experiencing housing insecurity and serve as a point of contact that can develop relationships with property owners, maintain records of available housing, connect students with housing opportunities and broker connections to legal assistance in situations where it is needed.
  • Coordinate student placement, tracking, and case management for Emergency Housing placements.
  • Establish functional partnerships with city and county agencies, community, and faith-based organizations in order to effectively refer eligible students to off-campus rapid rehousing programs, emergency shelters, and wrap-around case management.
  • Responsible for overseeing, managing and coordinating the day-to-day-activities of the Basic Needs Ally outreach program which includes student supervision; recruitment and advisement; and program development, coordination, implementation, and assessment.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to other campus colleges/departments and represents Basic Needs in campus-wide events, such as New Student Orientation/Transfer Orientation, etc.
  • Coordinate and supervise efforts and activities related to outreach and awareness campaigns around basic needs initiatives across all units and departments on campus.
  • Develop and implement a plan for targeted workshops varying populations: faculty, staff, students, administrators, and community members.
  • Oversee interns and students facilitating Basic Needs Ally workshops, classroom presentations, targeted presentations, etc.
  • Lead weekly meetings with CalFresh Coordinator and Care Coordinator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Care Manager to ensure the success of the COVID-19 Student Care Support and Basic Needs on behalf of the university, students, employers and alumni.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

    Experience: Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. (A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.)

    Preferred Qualifications
     
  • Masters' degree in Social Work, Counseling, Public Health, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of individuals and multicultural university environment and demonstrated skill in assisting and speaking with persons of various ages, socio-economic, cultural and/or education backgrounds.
  • Prior experience working with or awareness of colleges student who have experienced financial difficulties/hardships and/or emergencies situations.
  • Experience working with local community resources and developing partnerships that enhance student success.
  • Experience with or the ability to consult with the campus community regarding student concern.
  • Experience in marketing programs (web, social media, flyers, e-mail campaigns).
  • Working knowledge of campus, local community and private health and welfare resources.
  • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Ability to efficiently develop, implements, coordinates and evaluates student advising programs.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to provide training and work direction to professional student services staff.
  • Excellent communication both oral and written skills to effectively handle a broad range of interpersonal contacts.
  • Ability to coordinate, organize and demonstrate command of a complex and continual changing array of information, date, places and people.
  • Strong computer skills with experience with a broad range of Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) in order to prepare a wide variety of correspondence, reports, presentations, etc.

    Salary Range
    Anticipated salary will be $4,691 - $5,160 per month plus excellent paid benefits. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full SSP IV range: $4,691 - $6,683 per month)
