Summary 
The Career Coach will work with many Illinois College constituencies as they provide career development-related services to students.  This position is student-centered as the majority of the interaction is daily student contact, as well as the administration of the various office and campus-wide initiatives. The position will also collaborate with the college marketing department to develop and maintain the social media presence and general marketing for the entire experiential learning team. This is an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact on college retention by helping students with important career-related skills that they will utilize throughout their life. Time will be split 75% Career advising and 25% social media and digital marketing for the department.
Essential Functions 
The following list of duties is meant to be representative of the work performed in this position. The omission of a specific duty or responsibility will not preclude it from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical extension of position responsibilities.
  • Provide career coaching/advising to assist students with major exploration, internship search, career decisions, self-assessments, and graduate school consideration
  • Conduct consultations and workshops to instruct entry level students on effective job seeking strategies including resumé, CV, and cover letter development; interviewing skills; social media presence; and articulation of strengths of a liberal arts education to employers
  • Serve as primary coach for undecided students; conducting career interest assessments and providing interpretation of results.  
  • Assist with formalized campus programs for undecided and transfer students
  • Assist with the IC Connections and Sophomore Year Experience programs within the College’s strategic plan
  • Create and implement a marketing plan for social media across platforms, collaborate with the college marketing department, and assist experiential learning team on general and targeted marketing strategies
  • Serve as a key member of the student work experience team. Partner with campus student work supervisors to ensure learning objectives are developed and feedback is provided for all student work positions
  • Coordinate assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of programs
  • Provide general assistance to the Executive Director and the Director of Career Counseling and Internship Development as needed

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required with at least 2 years of relevant work experience; Master’s Degree and experience in higher education or career advising preferred 
  • Ability to understand and articulate the value of a liberal arts education and its contribution to future work
  • Demonstrated skill with social media, especially LinkedIn, is required
  • Demonstrated experience creating strong relationships with internal and external constituents
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience doing group presentations
  • Self-starter with experience working both independently and in a team as well as evidence of success in developing and maintaining partnerships
  • Must possess intercultural competence and the ability to work with a diverse population of college age population, including first generation and low income students
  • Ability to establish learning outcomes and assessment practices
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and experience with Excel, Word and presentation programs required; Knowledge of Jenzabar preferred
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends, as needed
