The Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development is looking for an organized and detailed oriented individual to oversee our business operations. The Fleishman Center, nationally recognized as an Exemplary Career Center by the National Career Development Association, provides comprehensive career services to students and alumni, including career identification and planning, internship options, job search assistance, on campus employment opportunities, and comprehensive graduate data.

The career consultant will develop innovative programming, provide one-on-one and group career consulting reflective of up-to-date knowledge of career, labor market and job search trends. The position includes roles as a career consultant, career community developer, and presenter.

Job Description:

Direct Student Services (30%):

-Provide walk-in career consulting and appointments to students in the Hinman and College in the Woods residential communities’ on topics ranging from: career assessment interpretation (MBTI, Strong, Focus2), career advising, job and internship search strategies, reviewing application materials, and interviewing, among other career preparation strategies.

-Staff Fleishman walk-in career consulting for a minimum of two shifts per week.

-Create and present informational workshops to student groups, classes and university events, on career related topics. Some presentations will involve an evening and/or weekend time commitment.

Outreach & Career Community Building (40%):

Each staff member in the Fleishman Center works to foster collaboration through our career community development concept focused on:

-Conducting outreach to faculty, alumni, students, student organizations, employers, parents, and staff to enhance our wisdom and partnerships across and beyond campus.

-Liaising and developing programs with/honoring referrals from their communities.

-Communicating on behalf of the center and seeking out collaboration.

-Coordinating and developing career resources and programs tailored to career development needs in collaboration with community partners to serve Binghamton University students.

Career Communities for this position include: Hinman and College in the Woods residential communities; Equal Opportunity Program; TRiO; Student Support Services; Dean of Students; Multicultural Resource Center; students of color; the LGBTIQ communities; Federal, state and local government job search and exploration programming;

-Collaborate with partner offices to provide programs and services that support Binghamton students in these communities.

-Foster working partnerships with Residential Life Staff leading to collaboration on career events.

-Participate in Residential Life professional staff and resident assistant staff training.

-Plan programming focused on the preparation of Binghamton students for careers, jobs and internships in government.

Program Planning & Administration (20%):

-Provide oversight to the Fleishman Center’s programming request process, managing the online “Request for Presentation Form” and invite colleagues and student staff to fulfill requests for presentations to ensure the timeliness and quality of the presentation being delivered.

-Provide support to Fleishman summer orientation programs, serving as a presenter for parents and incoming first-year students.

General Administrative/Operational Support (10%):

-Contribute to departmental reporting including inputting career consulting notes documenting session outcomes.

-Participate in Fleishman staff meetings, team meetings and foster partnerships both across and beyond campus.


Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s degree.

-Familiarity with student development and counseling theories and approaches needed to serve diverse undergraduate and graduate students’ career needs including those in the LGBTIQ community and students of color.

-Demonstrated experience working cooperatively and collaboratively with students, employers, staff and faculty with diverse backgrounds and perspectives to ensure positive relations and career success.

-Excellent written and oral communication skills.

-Willingness to work weekends, evenings and travel and as needed.

-Possess an understanding of computer applications - must demonstrate proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google apps for Education.

-Highly motivated, detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task while meeting multiple concurrent deadline.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Master's Degree or professional degree in relevant field.

-Three to five years of progressive experience in working with diverse students and members of the LGBTIQ community, preferably in higher education.

-Ability to administer and interpret MBTI, Strong and Focus2 results as appropriate.

-Preferred knowledge of a career management systems, such as Handshake.

-Self-starting, creative professionals with the ability to create and maintain collaborative relationships and adapt to change while handling multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

-Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
