Position Description

The Division of Student Affairs at Iowa State University is seeking a Communications & Program Coordinator to assume responsibility for special projects, programs and communications within the Division of Student Affairs and the Student Affairs Central Office. This individual will provide direct assistance to the Senior Vice President for Student Affairs (SVPSA) and the Student Affairs Senior Leadership Team (SASLT) with managing projects and initiatives designed to advance the strategic priorities of the Division of Student Affairs. The Communications & Program Coordinator will research and analyze issues of current interest; create key messaging and design public relations materials and presentations; compose and edit presentations, proposals, speeches and correspondence for the SVPSA and SASLT; provide leadership and direction for Student Affairs web site development and monitor web site content, design, and quality; lead social media content strategy for the Division by developing an integrated social media content plan, sourcing and sharing content and managing interaction with followers; coordinate efforts of the Division of Student Affairs communications staff and facilitate monthly meetings of a social media group; ensure consistent identity and branding for the SVPSA office and throughout the Division; assist with special and annual programs and events within the Division and the University; provide support for Student Affairs initiatives and advancement of departmental strategic priorities; collaborate with staff and others outside of the Division in preparing communications and reports; and represent the SVPSA or Division on various committees.

The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal, public/customer relations skills; the desire to work as part of a team; superior written and verbal communication skills; and an awareness of current social and academic issues and trends with an understanding of current issues in higher education. Along with strong attention to detail, the ability to work with a wide range of internal and external groups, the ability to clearly and concisely present ideas and concepts and the ability to prioritize projects are also needed to be successful in this role.


Job Requirements

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master's degree and 2 years of related experience; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling 8 years. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or a related field. Experience which demonstrates knowledge of current issues in higher education. Experience developing programs and events. Experience or education which would demonstrate knowledge of current electronic and print publication development and design techniques, communication and printing practices, brand management, web site development and social media strategy. Experience working with content management systems, design software, and survey/forms tools (i.e., Drupal, WordPress, Qualtrics).
