Position Description

The Coordinator of Diversity Initiatives and Civic Engagement is a 12-month, full-time, live-on professional staff member in the Office of Student Activities. The Coordinator of Diversity Initiatives and Civic Engagement develops and implements programs and activities that enhances the undergraduate experience as well as educates the campus community on issues of diversity and civic engagement. The coordinator is an advocate for traditionally underrepresented students and serves as a liaison to the campus community for student needs.  The Coordinator takes an active role in the development of student clubs and organizations.

  • Responsible for following the policies and procedures as defined in the employee handbook.
  • Assesses the needs of the diverse student population and provides direction for diversity and inclusion initiatives with a focus on student clubs and organizations.
  • Serves as a support for the interests of traditionally underrepresented students, student clubs, and student organizations.
  • Coordinates the Multicultural Resource Room and the Rainbow Room. Recruits, selects, trains, and supervises student staff for those area.
  • Meets one-on-one and in groups with traditionally underrepresented students to address issues of concern and consults with campus offices to insure that the appropriate services are available to students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Works with local and campus community to develop community service and civic engagement opportunities.
  • Assist with coordination of major cultural activities, including, but not limited to the African-American History Month, Hispanic Awareness Month, National Coming Out Day, SMCM Pride Month, and Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.
  • Supports oversight of a selection of the Student Government Association (SGA) clubs and organizations.
  • Provides support to the commuter student population.
  • Supervises para-professional and student staff.
  • Supports and participates in activities and programs offered by the Office of Student Activities.
  • Has “on-call” responsibilities and serves as a member of the On-Call Professional team
  • Participates as an active member of the Student Affairs staff by supporting division-wide efforts as needed.

Job Requirements

Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Personnel, or related field. At least 2-3 years of post-graduate experience in student retention issues, cultural diversity/sensitivity training, and strong advising skills.  Any combination of acceptable education and experience, which has provided the necessary knowledge and skills to fulfill the requirements of this position, may be considered.  Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
