Starting salary range: $16.43 - $28.64/hourly. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Involves planning, developing, implementing and advising on programs, services, activities and processes for students in their non-academic life at the university, including residential life, public service, student conduct and judicial affairs, identity-based matters, sexual violence, leadership development, student government, student businesses, student organizations, and other student resource center areas.

Using professional student services theories and concepts, performs a limited range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life program. Works independently to provide information and interpretation of clearly defined policies, procedures and regulations. Receives direction regarding more complex issues and / or program(s). Identifies individual student needs for programs and services and advises on appropriate programs and resources. Using counseling and facilitation skills, performs a range of duties and responsibilities to create an inclusive residence and community for the Apprenticeship on Ecological Horticulture (AEH) at the UCSC Farm and Garden. Works independently to provide information and interpretation of clearly defined policies and procedures. Addresses and resolves conflict and policy violations. Advises individual apprentices on appropriate resources. Provides logistical, curricular and other support to the AEH.

The mission of the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) is to research, develop, and advance sustainable food and agricultural systems that are environmentally sound, economically viable, socially responsible, non-exploitative, and that serve as a foundation for future generations.

The Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture is a 6-month, practical hands-on training in the concepts and practices of organic gardening and small-scale farming. This full-time, residential program is held at CASFS's 33-acre farm and garden on the UCSC campus. CASFS also offers a year-long residential fellowship program for apprenticeship graduates. The fellows continue their education while assisting with farming and gardening duties, help to facilitate the community and support the instructional component of the incoming apprentices.

Qualifications include:

 

 

 

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
     
  • Basic knowledge of counseling techniques.
     
  • Interpersonal skills and cultural competencies to work effectively with a diverse population.
     
  • Skills in facilitation, active listening, critical thinking; written and verbal communication.
     
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, conflict resolution, and policy implementation.

    Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
