Position Description

Oversees day to day department operations and projects; provides and implements residential and academic programs within the residence halls; supervises lower level staff and students to include assigning duties, checking work, approving time off, handling disciplinary issues, signing timesheets, and preparing evaluations; coordinates the selection and training of student staff; leads weekly area team meetings; conducts weekly one-on-ones with each direct report; maintains frequent contact with Community Directors and Resident Assistants; provides leadership and direction for all aspects of residence hall operations; responsible for daily review of the Community Director On-Call Report and follows-up with student conduct violations and concerns as needed; serves as advisor/driver for student trips and conferences using a University vehicle; assists in the development of effective community standards for an entire residential area; serves as an advisor for student groups as necessary; provide proper management of all Programming/Community Development records and documentation; serves as the resource for community-wide programs each semester; oversees student leadership and professional development for the area; challenges and upholds standards for inappropriate behavior, policy adherence, and community development; develops a strong sense of community in each residential community; ensures that each Resident Assistant is familiar with their residents; implements and demonstrates a strong legacy of engaging student programs and events within the residential communities (i.e. residence halls); improves the quality of student engagement in each residence hall; responsible for providing basic confidential paraprofessional counseling for residential students and is aware of his/her own limitations in this area and refers students to more appropriate personnel when necessary; informs Associate Director of counseling issues, situations, and referrals in a timely manner; provides referrals to the appropriate personnel, offices, or areas as needed based upon individual circumstances and situations; serves as the supervisor for area wide judicial officers/housing violations; works evenings and weekends when "on-call" and when overseeing student events; interacts by phone, letter, or in person directly with other residence managers with the ability to respond to emergencies within 20 minutes; serves as essential personnel (e.g. the ability to remain or arrive to campus in the event of critical time, i.e. hurricane, tornado, etc.); serves in the primary professional staff on-call rotational schedule in order to serve as a resource for the Community Director on-call, and be able to resolve after-hours emergencies/crisis situations with the residential community and respond when needed; manages all aspects of residential area hall opening, closing, and break housing; assumes overall responsibility of residential area key control and accountability; ensures appropriate area coverage for days, evenings, and special events; facilitates the area-wide housing assignments process; provides proper management of area room condition forms, room changes, and effective housing assignments to include room audits, rosters, etc.; executes administrative operations such as non-payment , non-enrollment, administrative removals, etc.; demonstrates proficiency in Housing Administration (e.g. room changes, check-ins, check-outs, student conduction administration, etc.); demonstrates proficiency with use of various software systems (e.g.Starez, Maxient, Banner, TMA, etc); serves on departmental or University committees as assigned; participates in departmental staff meetings; maintains an area-wide budget; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required; related duties as required.


Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, one year directly related residence hall or student life experience, and possession of a valid driver's license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama.  Master's degree is preferred.
