Position Description

Provides area wide supervision, management and administrative leadership for a residential community of approximately 1,200 residential students; supervises three to four Community Directors who oversee multiple residence halls consistent with the departmental and university mission to develop a safe, student centered, and living-learning environment that fosters student growth, leadership development, diversity, and multiculturalism as well as personal, spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and academic success; supports residential education and overall community development; oversees and is responsible for numerous critical day-to-day department operations and projects; provides and implements residential and academic programs within the residence halls, supporting the selection and recruitment of Community Directors, Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants and other professional and paraprofessional staff members within University Housing; develops, leads, and institutes systemic student leadership initiatives in the residence halls; advises the Residence Hall Association (RHA), National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), and other student organizations/groups in University Housing; supports the creation of a national brand for staff selection and training as well as residential student leadership; may serve as the Advisor or Co-Advisor to the RHA to support the development of a nationally recognized RHA that is noted for its leadership and service on campus; may serve as the Advisor or Co-Advisor to the NRHH to support the development of a nationally recognized chapter that is noted for bids and institutional programming and recognition; creates, implements, and cultivates evening and weekend programs consistent with national housing standards and the mission of the department; develops, coordinates, and communicates a series of holistic intentional programs for the residence halls and the dining hall; collaborates with campus partners to develop a systematic and timely training (i.e., Environmental Health, Campus Police, Student Health, Counseling & Testing, Rec.Sports etc.); coordinates, supports, develops, and implements ongoing student staff in-service training for Resident Assistants, Community Directors and paraprofessionals as appropriate; oversees and approves area staff program proposals and manages program funding request; ensures that all programs meet the standard as set forth by the department; accepts, reviews, and approves program proposals of Resident Assistants and Community Directors; coordinates all residential academic programs and coordinates with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs (i.e. Jag Success, Student Activities, etc.) to develop impactful programs that support housing retention goals.; establishes and develops academic programs within the residence halls to include faculty seminars, lectures, and courses etc; works with the learning communities to improve faculty engagement with students and academic success in the residence halls; supports the coordination of tutorial labs, and academic support programs with Academic Success; manages and oversees the day to day housing enrollment/occupancy within the residential community; oversees, supervises, and coordinates all summer conferences day-to-day operations to include; recruiting, selecting, training, supervising and evaluating the Conference Assistant staff and graduate assistants; oversees all summer housing operations to include managing assignments, room changes, recruiting, selection, training and evaluation of Summer Resident Assistant (SRA) and summer desk operation; may serve as a student conduct officer for University Housing as well as supervises the student conduct case load for Community Directors to ensure due process and timely follow-up of student judicial cases; collaborates with the Assistant Director of Housing to address judicial referrals and Title IX and follow-up as appropriate; reviews the Community Director On-Call Report and follows-up with violations and student concerns as needed; responsible for the daily review and follow-up of the incident reporting system to ensure the accuracy and integrity of staff reporting.; supports the recruitment, hiring, training, selection, supervision and evaluation of 10-30 Desk Assistants; indirectly supervises all front desks and community desk operations; develops and coordinates the Health & Safety Inspection processes for all residence halls; supports the execution and follow-up of housing administrative processes (e.g. non-enrollment, non-payment, immunization processes, etc.) and coordinates, develops, and authorizes desk communications, and protocol as appropriate; participates in a regular on-call rotation to respond to issues, concerns and crisis that arise on campus; ability to respond to campus within 20 minutes, as needed; supervises, hires, trains, and evaluates Community Directors, Resident Assistants and Desk Assistants; serves as advisor/driver for student trips and conferences using a University vehicle; annually improves the quality of student engagement in each residence halls; provides basic resources and student referrals; reports Title IX concerns and/or other issues as appropriate; informs supervisor of counseling issues, situations, and referrals in a timely manner; assumes overall responsibility of residential area key control and accountability; utilizes various software including StarRez, Maxient, Banner, and TMA to handle housing administration, such as room changes, check-ins, check-outs, student conduct administration; serves on departmental or University committees as assigned; maintains an area-wide budget; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours are required; related duties as required.

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, two years of experience as a Residential Hall Director, and possession of a valid driver's license and maintenance of a driving records sufficient to maintain insurance under the University of South Alabama. Graduate coursework in student affairs, College Student Personnel, or Higher Education Administration, or related is preferred. A master's degree will substitute for one year of the required experience.
