Position Description

Overview:

New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) seeks a highly energetic, innovative, experienced, student-centered and progressive Dean of Students with a proven record of successful leadership in promoting an integrated, engaged student experience in a dynamic university environment. Successful candidates will display a passion for and resonance with the mission of the university; a commitment to providing an outstanding experience to NYIT’s undergraduate and graduate students; an aptitude to work collaboratively throughout an institutional community, and the highest level of personal and professional integrity. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of Students—New York Campuses portfolio includes the Office of Residence Life, the Office of Student Engagement (including First Year Experience, Student Activities and Programs, Student Leadership Development, Fraternity and Sorority Life, New Student Orientation) and the Office of the Dean of Students (managing students of concern, student behavioral intervention and assessments, Title IX, academic integrity, and student conduct and community standards). Given new leadership at the President and his cabinet levels, there is strong interest in better aligning the areas of student life and student affairs to optimize the student experience by further integrating these areas with, for example, academic affairs and academic support programs. One of NYIT’s highest priorities is enhancing student success.


Job Requirements

Specific responsibilities for this individual include:

Champions NYIT’s goal to be a student-centered institution that creates culture change, promotes inclusion and diversity, stimulates innovation and entrepreneurship, and promotes personal and professional student growth and development;
As part of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team, creates and advances the strategic goals of the unit, including serving as an advisor to the Provost’s office; consults with other institutional leaders on policies, practices, and plans for the institution;
Maintains high-level visibility to students, staff, and faculty on both NY campuses at NYIT-sponsored on- and off-campus events and programs;
Supervises 2 associate deans, 5-6 unit directors, 1 case manager, and 1 administrative staff person;
Oversees the Dean of Students budgets for both NY campuses and indirectly oversees the budgets of all departmental units within Student Life;
Serves as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator for student cases; works closely with the Director of Compliance and Title IX;
Works closely with academic partners (e.g., faculty, department chairs, deans)  and with student affairs professional staff on both NY campuses to enhance the NYIT experience through shared programs, services, resources and initiatives;
Serves on selected committees to support initiatives that drive campus change, contributing to processes for ongoing accreditation, institutional compliance, and strategic planning;
Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications: The Dean of Students is responsible for championing NYIT’s goal to be a “student-centered” university and for promoting and advancing other goals and visions related to the student experience as articulated by the institution. The Dean will provide leadership in building a vibrant, multifaceted student educational environment that promotes professional success, an inclusive environment, and institutional pride and affinity. The successful candidate will bring seasoned experience in a culturally diverse environment actively facilitating the advancement of inclusion, diversity, and equity. The successful candidate will bring outstanding vision, energy, managerial, and entrepreneurial talent as well as rich experience and personal qualities to support the development of a high-quality student affairs program on both New York Campuses of NYIT. They should have an appropriate advanced degree (doctorate preferred); a minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible experience; the ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders; strong administrative, financial management/budgeting, strategic and tactical planning, and problem solving skills utilizing a solutions-based mindset; working knowledge of current academic issues facing higher education; and a strong commitment to providing excellent service to multiple constituents.
