Position Description

Dedicated to diversity, inclusion and equity, the College of Education at the University of Memphis is seeking an innovative and experienced leader to chair the Department of Leadership. The Department Chair will encourage and support growth and innovative initiatives that build on the foundations of highly successful academic programs. The Department Chair is responsible for overall leadership and administration of the department including oversight of academic programs, faculty review, course scheduling, budget, support of faculty productivity and professional development, and facilitation of innovation. This is a faculty position with administrative responsibilities, and the Chair serves on the Dean’s Council and College Leadership Team.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

A doctoral degree from an accredited university with a specialty closely related to one of the teaching areas represented within the department;
A distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and service that merits appointment as a tenured full professor in an area represented within the department;
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
Demonstrated commitment to educational and cultural needs of diverse populations; and
Success in developing and sustaining community partnerships in urban settings.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Administrative and/or leadership experience in an academic unit;
Experience with externally-funded projects;
Experience as administrator in PK-12 schools or a college or university setting;
Extensive involvement and leadership at the national level (e.g. journal editor,  service in national professional organizations);
Successful experience with strategies that support student recruitment, retention and graduation efforts;
Experience with accreditation agencies such as NCATE, CAEP, SACS, and AdvancEd;
A national/international reputation and a record of outstanding scholarship in one or more academic areas of the Department that warrants appointment at a faculty rank of full professor; and
Demonstrated history of cultural responsiveness and inclusiveness by developing/implementing innovative programs and services that respect the diverse needs of our partners from all communities.


Job Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chair provides leadership in the administration of programs leading to graduate degrees and a graduate certificate on the University of Memphis main campus and the University of Memphis Lambuth campus in Jackson, TN. The MS major in Leadership and Policy Studies has concentrations in School Administration and Supervision, in Leadership and in Student Personnel. The EdD major in Leadership and Policy Studies has concentrations in Educational Leadership and in Policy Studies. The EdD major in Higher and Adult  Education has concentrations in Higher Education and in Adult Education. The Graduate certificate is in Community College Teaching and Leadership. The Chair interacts with University colleagues and alumni; establishes collaborative relationships with community, regional, and national partners; participates in national, regional, and state professional organizations; extends the Department's focus on research and capacity to secure external funding; and provides for sound management for the Department's resources, including 8 full time and 3 part-time faculty, and 3 full-time staff.

The College of Education, with a faculty of 85 tenure-track positions, is fully accredited by NCATE/CAEP and is a leader in the enhancement of teacher and principal preparation (see www.memphis.edu/coe).
