Position Description

Deputy Vice Provost for Student Affairs


General summary/purpose:
Serves as a critical representative of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs (VPSA) at Johns Hopkins University on matters relating to the critical functions and goals of the office. Supports the work of the VPSA, serving as chief of staff, in directing and managing the short and long-term critical priorities, initiatives and activities that relate to current projects and goals that will enhance and/or transform the effectiveness and efficiency of Student Affairs. The person will work closely alongside the senior leadership team, providing representation, advice, input, project management and tracking, efficiency and operations excellence. This role requires strong organizational and collaboration skills, including planning, project management and supervisory skills, familiarity with higher education student affairs services and programs, and the ability to navigate a highly complex organization with diverse stakeholders.

This individual will serve as an information conduit to the VPSA, providing critical information and updates on matters of significance in a timely and expeditious manner. This individual will participate in senior level discussions and decision-making, presenting relevant information and research findings, tracking and following up as appropriate on deliberations, decisions and action plans, as well as drafting policies, reports, correspondence and other materials.

This individual will also develop, direct, and coordinate presentations, major addresses, remarks, and high-level briefings to the President, Provost and other members of the university leadership and/or outside constituencies.

The Office of the Vice Provost for university-wide Student Affairs oversees a range of services for students on the Homewood campus, including but not limited to student life, academic and student services, diversity and inclusion, student engagement, crisis and case management, student conduct, fraternity and sorority life, athletics and recreation, residential life, housing, dining, ID card services, and student accounts. The Office also liaises with student affairs departments throughout the Johns Hopkins University and advances collaborations to support University-wide student affairs objectives. The Deputy Vice Provost for Student Affairs provides critical support to the vice provost in coordinating and collaborating with the student affairs leaders throughout the University.

Specific duties & responsibilities:
Student Affairs Operations



  • Support the Vice Provost and Assistant Vice Provost in leading the operations of university-wide Student Affairs working in close consultation and collaboration with the Deans, Directors and a variety of offices across all academic divisions.
  • Acts as key adviser to the Vice Provost. Identify and brief Vice Provost on key issues requiring special knowledge and understanding of programs, initiatives, goals and objectives beyond day-to-say operational knowledge. Ensures matters requiring the VPSA's attention are developed, researched and evaluated thoroughly before presentation.
  • Serve as the information conduit to the VPSA, providing critical information and updates on matters of significance in a timely and expeditious manner. Reviews correspondence, communications, reports and presentations submitted to the VPSA; obtains additional information and/or recommends appropriate changes to facilitate future discussions.
  • Participates in senior level discussions and decision-making, presenting relevant information and research findings, taking notes on deliberations, decisions, and action plans as well as drafting policies, reports, correspondence and other materials, including those presented to the Provost and other Executives.
  • Ensures that the agenda and priorities of the VPSA's office are understood, supported and advanced, serving as the VPSA's voice - conducting briefings or meetings, providing clarification, direction or the necessary coordination, and/or carrying out key or vital initiatives on behalf of the VPSA.
  • Conduct and/or research activities in support of planning and decision making such as benchmarking initiatives with peer institutions, including research of best practices.
  • Exercise independent discretion and judgment and assume full responsibilities for resolving issues and problems of material importance.
  • Manage operations of the VPSA office.
  • Serve as a student affairs generalist, stays current on contemporary issues of the day in higher education and able to give thoughtful insights and consideration to the variety of current and strategic issues and topics within Student Affairs.
  • Participate in crisis management and response, drafting and disseminating communications as appropriate.
  • Under the VPSA's direction, develop and support a culture of continuous quality-improvement, shared efficiencies and professionalism within Student Affairs.



Represent Student Affairs Organization



  • Builds and stays in close working relationship and coordination with a wide range of offices and staff, internal or external to the University as well as the office of Student Affairs.
  • Staff the Student Life Committee of the Board of Trustees. Assist in preparation of the agenda, take minutes and maintain responsibility for their final content, manage correspondence/communication with the Trustee members and the Chair. Research special topics and originate professional, succinct, and accurate reports and presentations. Recommend readings, articles and discussion questions for the agenda.
  • Convenes, manages and facilitates workgroups as assigned by the VPSA on committees as assigned.
  • Independently represent the Vice Provost and the needs of Student Affairs at internal and external meetings
  • Interact with the senior leadership team and senior leaders of the JHU Schools on matters of importance to the Vice Provost on his/her behalf or in his/her absence
  • Attend meetings, gather information, represent the Vice Provost, make decisions as appropriate.



Project Management



  • Independently manage critical, timely and important short-term and long-term special projects on behalf of the Vice Provost of Student Affairs. Collaborates as required with other team members, including developing plans, defining and communicating alternatives and making recommendations regarding appropriate courses of action based on thorough understanding of desired outcomes, expectations and timelines.
  • Assume responsibility for keeping broad Student Affairs initiatives on-track and completed on a timely basis. This includes working directly with Deans and Directors from the schools university-wide to obtain and track pertinent, and frequently sensitive and confidential information.
  • Tracks and assesses progress toward goals/priorities and takes appropriate action to influence outcomes.






  • Advise the VPSA on invitations, speaking engagements and professional commitments.
  • Coordinate all media requests (internal and external) within Student Affairs in collaboration with university central and divisional communications resources when appropriate.
  • Supervise the communications team, overseeing the development of communications from the VPSA (including those to parents, students, and staff).
  • Work with autonomy and respect the importance of collaboration to build agreement with Student Affairs and university-wide leaders
  • Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality
  • Flexible, highly skilled and independent position able to handle other appropriate matters as assigned by the Vice Provost



Minimum qualifications (mandatory)



  • Master's degree required with a minimum of 7 years progressively responsible related experience in Higher Education



Preferred qualifications



  • Previous experience working in Student Affairs in a higher education institution
  • Previous experience supervising and developing staff preferred.



Special knowledge, skills, and abilities



  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of research and teaching as well as student development in a premier university.
  • Experience working closely with senior level executives in an education, government or corporate setting
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large and complex initiatives to successful completion with the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities simultaneously
  • Ability to think and plan strategically and possess a leadership style that works in collaboration with a wide variety of constituencies, building good working relationships
  • Excellent oral, written, problem solving and interpersonal skills. Perceptive and politically savvy with a high degrees of diplomacy, tact and discretion.
  • Proven ability to handle highly confidential information in a professional manner required.
  • Outstanding management skills particularly in strategic and operational planning, facilitation, team building, change management and process improvement.
  • Must have the ability to exercise good judgment, make independent decisions, establish and maintain cooperative relationships with senior leadership, university officials and diverse teams across Student Affairs.
  • Strong supervisory abilities and proven experience in managing and developing high performance teams.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Office, presentation, database, and web applications required.



Technical qualifications or specialized certifications
Project Management certification ideal
