Position Description

Student Affairs at Virginia Tech enhances the student experience by fostering an inclusive, innovative, caring, and learning-centered environment. Reporting to the Senior Director of Cultural and Community Centers, the BCC director supports the university’s diversity and inclusion efforts by developing programs, events, and services that facilitate the personal, social, academic, and cultural well-being of Black and African American students. Specifically, the director develops and implements programs, events and services with the purpose of increasing intercultural exchange and engagement, cultural awareness and competence, and community development as a means to achieving academic excellence. The director is responsible for analyzing campus, regional and national data on conditions affecting the Black and African American community, using this information to inform and educate the campus community about issues, and taking appropriate and responsible actions consistent with advocacy and support of a welcoming and supportive campus community for Black and African American undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, alumni and community members. The BCC director will work in collaboration Housing and Residence Life and the Student Success Center to support the Ujima Living Learning Community.


Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree and demonstrated progressive experience.
• Experience creating learning environments and opportunities for Black and African American students
• Demonstrated experience in project management and/or program planning.
• Proven competency in facilitating group dialogue.
• Exceptional communication skills.
• Personal commitment to social justice and/or intercultural competence.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience advising student organizations in higher education.
• Experience in conducting assessments and reporting findings.
• Familiarity with mentoring program management and development.
• Previous work in advocacy of individuals or groups.
• Commitment to remain current on issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience cultivating and sustaining relationships with historically underrepresented and underserved communities
