Position Description

Student Affairs at Virginia Tech enhances the student experience by fostering an inclusive, innovative, caring, and learning-centered environment. Reporting to the Senior Director of Cultural and Community Centers, the LGBTQ+ Resource Center Director supports the university’s diversity and inclusion efforts by developing programs, events, and services that facilitate the personal, social, academic, and cultural well-being of the LGBTQ+ community. Specifically, the director provides mentoring, advocacy, support services, programs, and events with the purpose of increasing intercultural exchange and engagement, cultural awareness and competence, and community development as a means to achieving academic excellence. The director is responsible for analyzing campus, regional and national data on conditions affecting the LGBTQ+ community, using this information to inform and educate the campus community about issues, and taking appropriate and responsible actions consistent with advocacy and support of a welcoming and supportive campus community for LGBTQ+ undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, alumni and community members.


Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree and demonstrated progressive experience.
• Experience creating learning environments and opportunities for LGBTQ+ students
• Demonstrated experience in project management and/or program planning.
• Proven competency in facilitating group dialogue.
• Familiarity with mentoring and program management.
• Exceptional communication skills.
• Personal commitment to social justice and/or intercultural competence.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience advising student organizations in higher education.
• Experience in conducting assessments and reporting findings.
• Previous work in advocacy that addresses the needs and interests of LGBT+ students.
• Commitment to remain current on issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience cultivating and sustaining relationships with historically underrepresented and underserved communities
