About Augustana College:

Augustana College is a private, selective, residential college of the liberal arts and sciences with enrollment of 2,600 students.  Our current cohort of students includes 29% first-generation students, 23% Pell Grant recipients, 21% students of color and 9% international students.  Our beautiful residential 115-acre campus is located in Rock Island Illinois, part of the Quad-Cities metropolitan area (population 400,000) along the Mississippi River, 165 miles west of Chicago.  Augustana awards the Bachelor of Arts in about 90 majors and related academic programs.

The Director of Disability Services will be responsible for coordinating services for students with disabilities.  Services include academic accommodations for students with exceptional learning needs and appropriate accessibility accommodations in residential and social spaces.  


Job Description:

Overview:  The Director of Disability Services is responsible for ensuring College services for students with disabilities are in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.   The Director will connect students with appropriate academic accommodations (such as assistive technology, private testing spaces, readers, note-takers, etc.), communicate with faculty about required accommodations for particular students, provide professional development programming for faculty to help them better serve students in the classroom, and advocate for students requiring accommodations as appropriate.  The Director will also collaborate with the Dean of Students and the Office of Residential Life in order to ensure that students receive appropriate accommodations in residential and social spaces (such as rooming arrangements, restroom facilities, accessibility, etc.).  Additionally, the Director will perform appropriate research and evaluation work related to Disability Services so as to monitor the performance of the office and work toward continual improvement.  

Job Duties:

  1. Ensure that Augustana's disability services are compliant with federal and state regulations
  2. Connect students with appropriate academic and residential  accommodations
  3. Communicate with faculty and staff about required accommodations for students, and ensure these accommodations are provided
  4. Manage and train multiple student and professional support personnel (including clerical workers, testing proctors, and other part-time support staff)
  5. Provide professional development experiences for faculty and staff that will enable them to better serve students with disabilities
  6. Advocate for students with disabilities as appropriate
  7. Review policies and procedures related to disability services with the goal of enhancing the quality of these services and improving efficiency
  8. Collect, monitor, and analyze data related to disability services in order to evaluate effectiveness
  9. Disseminate information about Augustana's disability services to the Augustana campus community (current students, faculty, and staff) and to external audiences (prospective students, external reviewers) as lead editor of web pages devoted to disability services
  10. Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Skills & Experience: 

  • 3 or more years of experience in disability services.  Experience in a higher education setting is highly preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with an ability to work and interact with college students as well as faculty and staff colleagues
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team of stakeholders
  • Software skills:  Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps required.  Experience with or ability to learn Starfish (student tracking software) and Sling (or other employee scheduling software) required.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in advocating for students requiring accommodations.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of campus members including students, faculty, colleagues, prospective students and parents.
  • Ability to speak Spanish highly preferred

Physical Requirements: 

  • Work is performed in a standard office setting
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing and pulling.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 15 pounds
  • Must be able to use a computer to accomplish a variety of job tasks.
