The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University's missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. The Division anticipates students' developmental needs throughout their collegiate experiences and promotes students development by fostering a community of learning, which encourages individual student involvement and participation. The Division of Student Affairs provides a broad range of support services, activities, and programs that seek to: Assist students in developing respect and appreciation for individual differences, interpersonal civility, and human rights. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.

 

The Dean of Students Office at East Carolina University is the campus resource for addressing and responding to student issues and concerns. Staff within the Dean of Students Office often serve as liaison between students, faculty, staff and administrators. The Dean of Students Office provides assistance to students, and family members who are navigating their way through various campus procedures. The staff in the Dean of Students Office often help to develop, articulate, disseminate and enforce East Carolina University rules, regulations, and policies. The Dean of Students Office works directly with students to help solve problems, to assist in individual and group crisis management, and to advocate for students when appropriate. Students are encouraged to visit staff in the Dean of Students Office to discuss ideas, personal issues, or general concerns about student life at East Carolina University. Committed to teaching civic engagement, the Dean of Students office cultivates a caring environment that values personal and academic integrity, respect for all people, and responsible citizenship where students are held accountable for their behavior. In collaboration with the University, the Dean of Student's staff is invested in serving students in a safe and healthy environment.

 

By connecting with other University departments and offices, the Office supports the needs of students and student communities and identifies resources to respond to those needs.

 

The Dean of Students Office administratively oversees the following areas: Center for Counseling & Student Development, Disability Support Services, Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities, Student Health Center, Student Legal Services, and Student Safety and Services.

 

Job Duties

Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice Chancellor Dean of Students, the Director provides leadership for the management, development and continuous improvement of comprehensive disabled student retention and graduation support services, including disability related accommodations and adaptive technology (AT) as mandated by federal law, state regulations and additional guidelines established by the Office of Civil Rights.

 

The Director is frequently called upon to provide support and guidance on issues regarding students with disabilities in collaboration with Academic Affairs administration and faculty, the University Registrar, Admissions and Recruitment, University General Counsel and Information Technology Services (ITS).

 

Specific Duties:

Responsible for the administration and leadership of Access and Disability Services (ADS).

Oversight of the day to day operation of the unit including:

  • Eligibility of students for disability status under the ADAA
  • Analysis of reasonable accommodation as it relates to the academic requirements of the institution and degree programs
  • Review of requests for non-academic accommodations including housing, transit, parking and student activities
  • Orientation of students to the procedures in place to activate accommodations
  • Direct delivery of accommodations including alternate formats, sign language interpreters, readers, extended time and distraction limited environment for testing
  • Adherence to federal guidelines pertaining to HIPPA, FERPA and rules of confidentiality
  • Consultations with faculty to facilitate the accommodation of students
  • Consultations with prospective students and their families regarding disability Support Services at East Carolina University
    Close monitoring of the budget with vigilance to expenses related to sign language interpreting, closed captioning and video remote interpreting services
  • Oversees the provision of legally mandated accommodations and specialized instructional programs for students with disabilities
  • Hires, supervises and evaluates departmental staff
  • Plays a lead role in raising awareness and educating the University community about serving students with disabilities and related institutional services
  • Provides administrative direction for the provision of access, accommodations and instructional programs for students with disabilities
  • Utilizes data and other measures to implement changes and improvements as needed
  • Develops and modifies procedures, and makes policy recommendations to facilitate the delivery of reasonable accommodations and instructional support
  • Makes personnel and staffing recommendations
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Education/Experience

A Master's degree from an accredited college or university. Five (5) years of varied experiences in a comprehensive Office for Disability Support Services. Demonstrated knowledge, ability and experience working with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as they apply to reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. Knowledge and ability to work with the diverse area of students with disabilities (SWD) and the prescription of services to meet their learning needs and/or accommodations required under the law.

 

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Experience in higher education preferred.
