Summary of position
The Director of Pre-College Campus Life is the leader of a Student Affairs team within the School of Professional Studies that is dedicated to ensuring a supportive, challenging, inclusive, and equitable living and learning environment for over 5,000 adolescents who attend Brown University Pre-College programs, the several hundred undergraduate students from Brown and other institutions who enroll in credit-bearing Summer Session courses, and the 1500 young athletes who attend residential Sports Camps over the course of the summer from all over the world. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs, the Director is responsible for the successful oversight of the residential and co-curricular experiences for Pre-College Program students and Sports Camp athletes, as well as the operational support of these endeavors, directly supervising three full-time professional staff and a cohort of graduate student interns, and indirectly over 250 seasonal staff who work directly with Pre-College Program students and Sports Camp athletes. The Director will be the senior Student Affairs professional within the Pre-College team, and will collaborate with Pre-College Program Directors and Sports Camp administrators define goals and values of campus life and co-curricular programs with particular attention to developmental needs of this population, including supporting social identity development and alignment with SPS’s DIAP (Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan) goals. The Director will have oversight of development, implementation, and assessment in a range of Campus Life areas including residential life (hiring, on-boarding, training, and supervision); risk mitigation; educational and social programming; student, athletes, and seasonal staff conduct; and crisis management. The Director will work with numerous campus colleagues, including but not limited to Health and Wellness, Department of Public Safety, Residential Life, Student Accommodations Services, Community Standards and Conduct, Facilities, and Dining Services to ensure close alignment with the University’s expectations of it’s community members and success for students, athletes, their families, and professional and seasonal staff. Evening and weekend work expected, including serving in an on-call rotation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership for the development and implementation of the student affairs work of Pre-College, Sports Camps, and Summer Session programs, including residential life, diversity and inclusion, crisis response, risk management, and student conduct (30%)
  • Collaborate with Pre-College Program Directors and Sports Camp administrators to develop and assess learning outcomes for students and athletes. (20%)
  • Liaise with all University offices to support non-instructional experiences for summer students and athletes. (15%)
  • Oversight of seasonal hiring of 200+ residential undergraduate and graduate student positions. Supervision of graduate student interns. (15%)
  • Provide crisis management for Pre-College Program students and Sports Camp athletes. (10%)
  • Serve as the point of contact for students, athletes, and their families with escalated questions and concerns related to the campus life experience. (5%)
  • Contribute to the ongoing growth, quality, and strategic development of Pre-College Programs. Other duties as assigned that support Pre-College Programming. (5%)


  • Master’s degree required. Degree preferred in student affairs, higher education, human development, education or related field.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in residential life, residential education, higher education, program management for college or pre-college age students preferred.
  • 5-7 years of experience supervising professional staff, preferably in a residential life setting or student affairs more generally.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and computer literacy.
  • Demonstrated record of exercising effective independent professional judgment and integrity, and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, and to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, student organizations, parents, faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to supervise others.
  • Energy, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
  • Demonstrated experience and success working in a multicultural environment with a clear understanding of diversity, social justice, and inclusion in both student and workplace settings.
  • Ability to interact with diverse constituencies, including students, colleagues, families, and alumni.
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices and theories of student learning and development at the high school, college, and graduate level; understanding of the cultural, social and educational needs of student residential communities.

Other Information
Summer programming through the School of Professional Studies enrolls approximately 5000 Pre-College Program students ages 14-18 years old and an additional 3000 Sports Camp athletes ages 6-18 years old in on-campus, online, and location-based programs. The majority of these young people are residential (approximately 4600 Pre-College students and 1000 Sports Campers) on the Brown campus in Providence and will be under the auspices of this position and all of the Pre-College Campus Life staff. This position will directly supervise seasonally a cohort of graduate student interns, and indirectly supervise 30 graduate student interns and over 250 undergraduate student staff who ensure the safety for these young scholars and athletes.
